Operation: Some differentials will have a drain plug located near the bottom of the differential housing. Advice: Not all differentials will have a drain hole. Some rely on the removal of the differential cover to drain the lubricant. With a drain pan in place under the differential, loosen the bolts along the bottom of the cover slowly working your way up and around to the top. When all of the bolts are a little bit loose, use a flat tip screwdriver or equivalent to break the seal between the differential housing and the cover. Allow the lubricant to drain into a drain pan before removing the cover and bolts. Recommendations: Oil drain pan
Operation: The differential gasket is used to seal the area between the differential housing and the differential cover. Advice: Some manufacturers do not use a gasket to seal the differential cover. These applications tell you to clean all of the old sealant from the housing and cover and apply a fresh bead of silicone sealant to the differential cover before bolting it into place. Check the repair guides for the vehicle that you are working on. Recommendations: Repair guides
Operation: Most differentials have a fill hole and plug roughly halfway up between the top and bottom of the differential housing. Advice: Most differentials are full when the lubricant is within a half inch from the bottom of the fill hole. Check the repair guides for the correct type of lubricant to use. Recommendations: Repair guides
Operation: Some differentials require an oil additive to further enhance the lubricants ability to protect special differential gears. Advice: Certain gear types such as hypoid gears and limited slip differentials require special gear oils or additives. Failure to use the correct fluid or additive when refilling the differential can cause premature wear and damage to the differential. Check the repair guides for the vehicle that you are working on. Recommendations: Repair guides
