Operation:
Idler pulleys are used for timing belt
routing and help to maintain belt
alignment.
Advice:
Idler pulley bearings are of the sealed
type and can not be serviced.
Check to make sure that there is no
wobble or play in the bearing and that
it turns smoothly.
If any play or roughness is found, the
idler pulley should be replaced with
the timing belt.
Recommendations:

Operation:
The tensioner pulley is used to
maintain proper timing belt tension.
Advice:
Too much tension will cause a strain on
any bearings involved. Not enough
tension can lead to jumped timing.

Operation:
The water pump is sometimes driven by
the timing belt.
Advice:
The life expectancy for the timing belt
and the water pump are close to the
same. If the water pump is driven by
the timing belt, due to the lack of
easy access, it is wise to replace them
both at the same time.
For more information select the "Job
Info" tab under water pump lookup.
Recommendations:

Gasket sealant
Antifreeze
Advice:
Most timing belt jobs require the
removal of all belts and some hoses in
order to gain access to the timing
components.
While you have them off is an excellent
time to evaluate the condition of the
belts and hoses and replace as needed.
For more information select the "Job
Info" tab under belt or hose lookup.
Recommendations:

Operation:
Both the camshaft and the crankshaft
have oil seals to prevent oil from
entering the timing area and
contaminating the timing belt.
Advice:
One of the biggest reasons for
premature timing belt failure is
contamination from oil and antifreeze.
Replacing the oil seals located behind
the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets
will help to ensure a long life from
your new timing belt.
Recommendations:
