Selecting the correct type of trailer hitch for your vehicle's towing capacity and trailer requirements is a critical factor in successful towing. Your hitch choices range from light duty to extremely heavy duty.

    UTILITY TRAILERS

    • Identify your vehicle's towing capacity by referring to your owner's manual.
    • Identify trailer type, weight and coupler style.
    • Finally, identify which class receiver you need in order to safely tow your cargo.

When towing heavy cargo, a towing assist may be needed.

    HITCH CLASS

HOW MUCH YOU CAN TOW SAFELY DEPENDS ON THE CAPACITIES OF EACH COMPONENT

Weight Carrying is a basic ball mount and coupler hitch without a weight-distributing system. Some hitches are designed and clearly marked "weight-carrying only". Dual-rating hitches are weight carrying and have weight distributing ability.

Weight Distributing is a towing situation where some or all of the tongue weight is redistributed through the vehicle chassis from the rear to front axles. The higher ratings require the use of a weight distributing ball mount as an attachment.

Tongue Weight is the weight on the trailer coupler when the trailer is fully loaded. It represents the downward weight applied by the towable equipment on the hitch ball. Generally, tongue weight should not be more than 10% of the gross trailer weight.

Trailer Hitches come in a variety of classes that offer different weight capacities ranging from 2,000 to 14,000 pounds (with a weight distribution system).

    WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION

The weight distribution system is for Class III-V hitches. The system is designed to distribute the trailer's tongue weight across the towing vehicle's four wheels. Without a weight distributing hitch, heavy tongue weight tends to lift the tow vehicle's front wheels and weigh down the vehicle's rear end. With a weight distributing hitch, your entire towing rig will ride level and be more stable on the road.

    SWAY CONTROL

Sway Control devices help reduce the lateral movements of the trailer to keep it in place behind your tow vehicle. The sway control mounts to the trailer frame on the tongue and to the hitch on the tow vehicle.

The sway control works best when you combine it with a weight distribution hitch on a Class 3 or higher rated hitch. Sway control will not work on trailers with surge brakes.
