• Bands are steel straps that are lined with friction material. One end of the band is anchored to the transmission case and the other end contacts a servo piston pin that actuates the band
• The primary function of a Band is to stop specific drums from spinning. The Band is located around the circumference of the drum it controls. When actuated it stops the drum friction much like a drum style wheel brake
• By stopping the drum and planetary gear set that is attached to the drum, it allows transmissions to achieve different gear rations (shift to and from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, reverse, etc.)
• The friction material that lines the Band wears over time and should be replaced when rebuilding a transmission to maintain proper shift quality
