Broke after a month-locked open although engine did not overheat

I bought this thermostat thinking it would be worth the extra cost. After a short time, it fail safed to the open position, causing my engine to run much cooler than designed. The engine never overheated, so the failsafe feature should have never engaged. On my vehicle it is hard to get to the thermostat, so it is a lot of extra work. I am going to replace with a standard thermostat this time, which I have never had issues with.

      Pros: None

      Cons: Failed, made extra work

      Correct temperature for performance

0 of 1 people found this helpful

This 195 degree thermostat is the correct temperature for proper performance in the 2000 Sonoma 4 cylinder, no doubt about it. I tried the 180 degree thermostat but it made the motor sluggish and the oil pressure unnervingly high. I would recommend buying one of these even if you plan to try a cooler one.

You'll need the black rubber gasket which is not included.

Pros: Easy to install, proper temperature

      Cons: Doesn't include gasket

      Fails safe often

1 of 1 people found this helpful

I installed the failsafe thermostat in my 1993 2500 7.4L Suburban while doing maintenance.I use this vehicle to pull my 24' enclosed trailer. I have not had any overheating issues with this vehicle. I started using the vehicle more over the winter and noticed the engine temp was just over 100*. I pulled the thermostat and sure enough it was wide open with the clip holding it there. I brought it back to autozone and they replaced it. The replacement thermostat did the same thing after a few days. On this truck it is not hard to replace this but it does take time from your day to remove it and go get a new one and reinstall.

Pros: When it fails it does in the open position

      Cons: Does it often.

      Failsafe my foot!

1 of 1 people found this helpful

This past week JAN '14 it was 0* or less here in KY. My Blazer had been doing fine, but three days ago I suddenly had no heat. I had replaced the old t-stat last summer with this one. Today 26JAN it's 45* (KY for ya), so I pull out the t-stat hoping it'll be the cheap repair I need. It was, $10 at the other parts store for a normal t-stat and gaskets and I've got lots of heat again. And no worries that this "safety" feature will leave me cold, again, for the remainder of winter. And yes I did drive it for a bit today to see if the warmer weather would make a difference, to no avail. The little built-in clips do work at holding open the t-stat, but I do not know how or when that feature could be a good thing in 0* weather. When the cold weather comes back around perhaps something else will fail and then I'll know what this Failsafe Thermostat was saving me from. I will re-post if/when.

Pros: First R&R is practice; you'll do better the second time.

Cons: When it sticks WIDE open you have NO HEAT!
