    REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



    2.4L Engine

    See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

    The timing belt must be removed for this procedure. Use care that all timing marks are aligned after installation or the engine will become damaged.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the accessory drive belts.
    4.  
    5. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the engine oil.
    6.  
    7. Remove the crankshaft damper/pulley using a jaw puller tool.
    8.  
    9. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt.
    10.

    1. Remove the crankshaft timing belt sprocket using tool No. 6793 or equivalent.
    2.  


    WARNING
    Do not nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.

    1. Remove the front crankshaft seal using tool No. 6771 or equivalent seal puller. Be careful not to damage the seal contact area of the crankshaft.
    2.

    1. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the lip of the new oil seal. Install the new front crankshaft oil seal using oil seal installer tool No. 6780-1 or equivalent. Install the new oil seal into the opening with the seal spring facing the inside of the engine. Be sure the oil seal is installed flush with the front cover.

    3. Install the crankshaft timing belt sprocket using tool No. 6792.
    4.  

    Be sure the word FRONT on the timing belt sprocket is facing you.

    1. Install the timing belt and timing belt cover.
    2.  
    3. Install the crankshaft damper/pulley onto the crankshaft. Use thrust bearing/washer and 12M-1.75 x 150mm bolt from special tool No. 6792. Install the crankshaft damper/pulley retaining bolt and torque to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Lower the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Install the accessory drive belts. Adjust the belts to the proper tension.
    8.  
    9. Refill the engine with the correct amount of clean engine oil.
    10.  
    11. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    12.  

    3.0L Engine
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the accessory drive belts.
    4.  
    5. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the mounting bracket and lay it aside, if equipped. Remove the compressor mounting bracket and adjustable drive belt tensioner from the engine.
    6.  
    7. Remove the power steering pump/alternator belt tensioner mounting bolt and remove the tensioner.
    8.  
    9. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket bolts, rear support lock nut and set the power steering pump aside.
    10.  
    11. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
    14.  
    15. Remove the right inner fender inner splash shield.
    16.  
    17. Remove the crankshaft drive pulley bolt, drive pulley and torsional damper. Lower the vehicle.
    18.  
    19. Place a floor jack under the engine. Separate the engine mount insulator from the engine mount bracket.
    20.  
    21. Raise the engine slightly and remove the engine mount bracket.
    22.  
    23. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt.
    24.  
    25. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
    26.  
    27. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts (5), and remove the oil pump assembly. Mark the mounting bolts for proper installation during reassembly.
    28.  
    29. Remove the front crankshaft oil seal from the oil pump cover using a suitable seal removal tool.
    30.  

    To install:
    1. Clean the oil pump and engine block gasket surfaces thoroughly.
    2.  
    3. Position a new gasket on the pump assembly and install on the cylinder block. Make sure the correct length bolts are in their proper locations and torque all bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install a new front crankshaft oil seal into the oil pump using seal installer tool MD-998717 or equivalent seal driver tool.
    6.  
    7. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing belt. Recheck engine timing marks.
    8.  
    9. Install the timing belt covers. Torque the timing belt cover fasteners to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Raise the engine slightly and install the engine mount bracket. Install the engine mount insulator into the engine mount bracket.
    12.  
    13. Install the torsional damper, crankshaft drive pulley and drive pulley bolt. Torque to 112 ft. lbs. (151 Nm).
    14.  
    15. Install the right fender inner splash shield. Lower the vehicle.
    16.  
    17. Install the power steering mount bracket and power steering pump.
    18.  
    19. Install the power steering/alternator belt tensioner.
    20.  
    21. Install the air conditioning adjustable drive belt tensioner and mounting bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    22.  
    23. Install the air conditioning compressor. Torque the compressor mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    24.  
    25. Install the accessory drive belts and adjust to the proper tension.
    26.  
    27. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
    28.  
    29. Refill the crankcase with the correct amount of clean engine oil and start the engine. Check for leaks.
    30.  

    3.3L and 3.8L Engines

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
    4.  
    5. Remove the right front wheel and the splash shield.
    6.  
    7. Remove the accessory drive belt.
    8.  
    9. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and remove the pulley using a suitable puller.
    10.  
    11. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the cover using crankshaft seal removal tool C-4991 or equivalent. Be careful not to damage the crankshaft seal surface of the front timing chain cover.
    12.  

    To install:
    1. Lubricate the lip of the new crankshaft oil seal with clean engine oil.
    2.  
    3. Use tool C-4992 or equivalent seal driver, to install the new crankshaft oil seal.
    4.  
    5. Install the crankshaft pulley using a bolt approximately 5.9 in. long and thrust bearing and washer plate. Make sure the pulley bottoms out on the crankshaft seal diameter. Install the bolt and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the accessory drive belt.
    8.  
    9. Install the inner splash shield and the wheel. Torque the wheel lug nuts, in a star pattern, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the engine oil level; add oil as necessary.
    14.  
    15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
