    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The parking brake mechanism on vehicles with rear disc brake applications, consists of a small duo-servo brake which mounted to an adapter. The hat (center) section of the rear rotor serves as the braking surface (drum) for the parking brakes.

On rear wheel drum brake applications, the rear wheel service brakes also act as parking brakes. The rear drum brake shoes are mechanically operated by an internal lever and strut connected to a flexible steel cable. The wheel brake cables are joined at an equalizer which is attached to the front cable leading to the foot lever.

The parking brake foot lever assembly used on all LH platform vehicles with and without rear disc brakes contains a self-adjuster for the cable system. Routine parking brake cable adjustments on all LH platform vehicles is not required.

    ADJUSTMENT

The parking brake foot lever assembly contains a self-adjuster. Routine parking brake cable adjustment is not required. However, adjusting of the parking brake cable on vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes relies on proper adjustment of the brake shoes. The park brake system on vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes must have the drum-in-hat brake shoes properly adjusted to 6.75 inches (171mm) diameter.

When repairs to the foot lever assembly or front cable are required the self-adjuster must be reloaded and locked out.

    1. Be sure that the front and both rear parking brake cables are properly installed to the equalizer bracket before you adjust the cable.
    2.
    3. Be sure that the cable is correctly seated on the cam surface of the parking brake mechanism.
    4.

The parking brake pedal must be in the fully released position when releasing the parking brake self adjuster.
