    1. Remove the free running hub bolts and washers.
    2.  
    3. Remove the hub ring and the knob. Wipe the parts clean.
    4.  
    5. Remove the internal snapring from the groove in the hub.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cam body ring and clutch retainer from the hub.
    8.  
    9. Remove the axle shaft snapring. For easier snapring removal, push inward on the axle shaft sleeve ring and at the same time, pull out on the axle shaft with a bolt.
    10.  
    11. Remove the axle shaft sleeve ring, and the inner clutch ring. A slight rocking of the hub may make extraction easier.
    12.  

    Use caution once the spring retainer is removed. Occasionally the spring will release and unexpectedly exit the hub assembly.

    1. Remove the pressure spring and the spring retainer ring.
    2.  

    To install:
    1. Grease the hub inner spline with Moly grease or equivalent.
    2.  
    3. Install the spring retainer ring, positioned with recessed undercut area going in first. Be sure ring seats against the bearing.
    4.  
    5. Install the coil spring, with the large end of the spring entering first.
    6.  
    7. Grease with Moly grease or equivalent and install the axle shaft sleeve and ring and the inner clutch ring. Be sure that the teeth are meshed together in a locked position for easy assembly. Rocking the hub back and forth may be required to align the spline. Keep the 2 gears in the locked position.
    8.  
    9. Install the axle shaft snapring. Push inward on gear and, if necessary, push out axle shaft to allow groove clearance on shaft for the snapring. Be sure snapring is fully seated in the snapring groove on the shaft.
    10.  
    11. Install the actuating cam body ring into the outer clutch retaining ring. Assemble into the hub.
    12.  
    13. Install the internal snapring. Be sure that the snapring is fully seated in the snapring groove in the hub.
    14.  
    15. Apply a small amount of Moly grease or equivalent on the ears of the cam. Apply a small amount of Parker O-ring lube or an equivalent lube in groove of actuating knob before assembling outer O-ring.
    16.  
    17. Assemble knob in hub ring and assemble to axle with knob in LOCK position. Assemble screws and washers alternately and evenly, making sure the retainer ring is not cocked in the hub.
    18.  
    19. Tighten the six hub bolts to 30 to 35 inch lbs. Be sure the washers are under each retaining screw. Each free running hub will fit either wheel. Do not drive vehicle until you are sure that both free running hubs are engaged or disengaged.

    EXTERNAL TYPE-F-250 ONLY

    1. Remove the free-running hub cap screws and washers.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the gear hub housing and slide it away from the hub and drum assembly.
    4.  
    5. Remove the snapring while holding pressure on the clutch gear. Ease the clutch gear and pressure spring out of the assembly. The actuator knob should be in the lock position for this step.
    6.  
    7. Turn the actuator knob to the free position. With a drift, drive the cam lock pin out of the assembly. Remove the actuating cam from the knob.
    8.  
    9. Remove the knob retainer snapring and remove the knob retainer. Using a capscrew, pull out slightly on the axle shaft and remove the snapring which retains the bushing and inner clutch gear assembly. Remove these parts.
    10.  
    11. Inspect the components for wear or damage and replace components as required.
    12.  

    To install:

    Before assembly, inspect the splines of the axle shaft to make sure that they are free of any possible nicks or burs.

    Threaded holes in the wheel hub should be cleaned before assembling new retainer screws. These holes can be cleaned by directing compressed air into the threaded holes.

    1. Apply Moly XL hi-speed grease to the back face of the bushing, also to the splines of the inner clutch gear.
    2.  
    3. Assemble the inner clutch gear into the bushing. Install the bushing and inner clutch gear onto the axle shaft. Install the snapring.
    4.  
    5. Apply a small amount of Parker O-ring lubricant on the actuator knob, making sure the knob is lubricated.
    6.  
    7. Assemble O-ring onto actuator knob. Install the actuating knob into the knob retainer with the arrow pointing to the free position.
    8.  
    9. Install the knob retainer snapring. Make sure the snapring is positioned into the groove in the knob.
    10.  
    11. Install the actuating cam onto the knob, aligning the ears of the cam with the slots of the retainer. Position the parts on a small piece of wood.
    12.  
    13. Assemble the cam locking pin through the grooves of the cam and holes in the actuating knob. Be sure the ends of the pin are flush with the outside diameter of the cam.
    14.  
    15. Turn the actuator knob to the lock position. Apply a small amount of Moly hi-speed grease to both grooves of the cam. Install the pressure spring and outer clutch gear. Compress the pressure spring by forcing down on the clutch gear and assemble the snapring. Make sure the snapring is secure in the groove of the cam.
    16.  
    17. Turn the actuator knob to the free position. Assemble the 6 dished washers to the 6 retainer screws as they were during removal.
    18.  
    19. Install 2 screws with correctly positioned washers into the knob retainer to properly line up the parts. Apply a small amount Moly hi-speed grease to the outer spline and the teeth of the outer clutch gear. Remove any excess lubricant from the gasket surface of the retainer.
    20.  
    21. Install a new outer retainer gasket. Assemble the gear hub housing by aligning the splines of the housing with those on the outer clutch gear. Then install a new inner metal gasket on hub housing.
    22.  
    23. Position the free-running hub subassembly to axle assembly using 2 new retainer screws as pilots to align the holes of the gasket to the holes of the wheel hub. Tighten the retainer screws to secure the free-running hub. Turn the actuator knob to the lock position.
    24.  
    25. Install the remaining 4 new retainer screws with washers. Tighten the screws evenly to 30-35 ft. lbs. The free-running hub may be hard to engage and disengage, however, after use they should loosen up for easier operation.
    26.  

    Do not drive the vehicle until both free-running hubs are either engaged or disengaged.

    Manual Locking Hubs

    1980-85 BRONCO AND F-150-F-250

    1. To remove the hub, first separate the cap assembly from the body assembly by removing the 6 socket head capscrews from the cap assembly and slip apart.
    2.  
    3. Remove the snapring from the end of the axle shaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lock ring seated in the groove of the outer wheel hub. The body assembly will now slide out of the wheel hub. Use an appropriate puller to remove the body assembly, as needed.
    6.  
    7. Reinstall the hub in reverse order of removal. Torque socket head capscrews to 30-35 inch lbs.
    8.  

    1986 BRONCO AND F-150-F-250
    1. Separate the cap assembly from the body assembly by removing the 6 Allen head capscrews from the cap assembly and slip apart.
    2.  
    3. Remove the snapring from the end of the axle shaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lock ring seated in the groove of the outer wheel hub.
    6.  
    7. Remove the body assembly from the hub. If the body is difficult to remove, install 2 capscrews and pull the body from the hub.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. Insert the body assembly into the hub. Install the lock ring in the groove to retain the body in the hub.
    2.  
    3. Install the snapring that retains the axle shaft to the body.
    4.  
    5. Position the cap onto the body. Install the retaining screws and tighten to 40-60 inch lbs.
    6.  

    Automatic Locking Hubs
    1980-84 F-250-F-350
    1. Remove capscrews and remove hub cap assembly from the spindle.
    2.  
    3. Remove capscrew from end of axle shaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove lock ring seated in the groove of the wheel hub with a knife blade or with a small sharp awl with the tip bent in a hook.
    6.  
    7. Remove body assembly from spindle. If body assembly does not slide out easily, use an appropriate puller.
    8.  
    9. Unscrew all three set screws in the spindle locknut until the heads are flush with the edge of the locknut. Remove outer spindle locknut with tool T8OT-4000-V, Automatic Hub Lock Nut Wrench or equivalent.
    10.  
    11. Reinstall in reverse order of removal. Tighten the outer spindle locknut to 15-20 ft. lbs. with special tool T8OT-4000-V, Automatic Hub Lock Nut Wrench or equivalent. Tighten down all three set screws.
    12.  
    13. Firmly push in body assembly until the friction shoes are on top of the spindle outer locknut. Install the capscrews into the axle shaft and tighten to 35-50 inch lbs.
    14.  
    15. Place cap on spindle and install capscrews. Tighten to 35-50 inch lbs. Turn dial firmly from stop to stop, causing the dialing mechanism to engage the body spline.
    16.  

    Be sure both hub dials are in the same position, AUTO or LOCK .

    1985-86 F-250-F-350

    1. To remove the hub, separate the cap assembly from the body assembly by removing the 5 capscrews, using Torx R bit TX25, from the cap assembly. Remove the cover.
    2.  

    Do not drop the ball bearing, bearing retainer or retainer race during removal.

    1. Remove the rubber seal. Remove the steal bridge retainer from the retainer ring space.
    2.  
    3. Remove the retainer ring by closing the ends with needle nose pliers while pulling the hub lock from the wheel hub.
    4.  

    To install:
    1. Start the lock hub assembly into the hub making sure the large tangs are lined up with the lock washer and the outside diameter and inside diameter splines are in line with the hub and axle shaft splines.
    2.  
    3. Install retainer ring by closing the ends with needle nose pliers and at the same time push the hub lock assembly into the hub.
    4.  
    5. Install the seal bridge retainer with narrow end first. Install the rubber seal over the hub lock.
    6.  
    7. Install the cover making sure the ball bearing, bearing race and retainer are in place. Tighten the 5 screws to 40-50 inch lbs. in sequence, torque one, skip one, etc. until all screws are tight.
