    3.0L & 4.0L OHV Engines
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Engine front cover
       
      Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks
       
      Timing chain tensioner, 4.0L engine only
       
      Sprocket bolt
       
      Timing chain, camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain, camshaft and crankshaft sprockets as an assembly
       

    2.  
    3. Align the timing marks.
    4.  
    5. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain tensioner
       
      Sprocket bolt. Torque the bolt to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
       
      Engine front cover
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  

    3.0L Engines
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Engine front cover
       
      Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks
       
      Timing chain tensioner, 4.0L engine only
       
      Sprocket bolt
       
      Timing chain, camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket as an assembly
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain, camshaft and crankshaft sprockets as an assembly
       

    2.  
    3. Align the timing marks.
    4.  
    5. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain tensioner
       
      Sprocket bolt. Torque the bolt to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
       
      Engine front cover
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  

    4.0L Engine
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the engine oil.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Engine from the vehicle
       
      Oil pan
       
      Engine front cover
       
      Cylinder heads
       

    6.  
    7. Lock the jackshaft tensioner by installing a pin.

      Jackshaft sprocket and chain assembly
       
      Left front cassette retaining bolt
       
      Cassette chain and tensioner assembly
       
      Rear jackshaft plug from the engine
       
      Right rear cassette retaining bolt and spacer
       
      Right rear cassette chain and tensioner
       
      Timing chain (s)

    8.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain(s)
       
      Right rear cassette chain, tensioner and sprocket
       
      Jackshaft sprocket and chain on the engine and remove the tensioner pin
       

    2.  
    3. Torque the jackshaft sprocket bolt in 2 stages:
      1. 32-35 ft. lbs. (43-47 Nm).
      2.  
      3. Turn an additional 65 degrees.
      4.  

    4.  
    5. Install or connect the following:

      Cylinder heads
       
      Front cover
       
      Oil pan
       
      Engine to the vehicle
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  
    7. Fill the engine with clean oil.
    8.  
    9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
    10.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist.
    4.  
    5. Remove the intake manifold.
    6.  
    7. Remove the fuel supply manifold.
    8.  
    9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
    10.  
    11. Remove the thermostat housing.
    12.  
    13. Remove the roller followers.
      NOTE
      You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC).


      NOTE
      The special tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block to position the engine at TDC.

    14.  
    15. Install the special tool.
      NOTE
      The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left-hand threaded bolt.


      NOTE
      If necessary, use camshaft gear torque adapter to loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.

    17. Using the special tool, loosen the RH camshaft sprocket bolt.
      NOTE
      The camshaft timing slots are off-center.

    18.  
    19. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools. Install the special tools on the front of the RH cylinder head.
    20.  
    21. Remove the RH lower splash shield.
    22.  
    23. Remove the RH camshaft tensioner.
      NOTE
      Leave the top two special tool clamp bolts loose.

    24.  
    25. Install the special tools on the rear of the RH cylinder head.
    26.  
    27. Install the special tool.
      NOTE
      The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left-hand threaded bolt.


      NOTE
      If necessary, use camshaft gear torque adapter to tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.

    28.  
    29. Tighten the bolts.
    30.  
    31. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
    32.  
    33. Tighten the camshaft bolt.
    34.  
    35. Install the RH camshaft tensioner.
    36.  
    37. Install the RH lower splash shield.
    38.  
    39. Remove the LH camshaft tensioner.
    40.  
    41. Install the special tools on the front of the LH cylinder head and tighten the top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
    42.  
    43. Loosen the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.
    44.  
    45. Loosen the top two clamp bolts on the special tool to allow the camshaft sprocket to rotate freely.
      NOTE
      The camshaft timing slots are off-center.

    46.  
    47. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools. Install the special tools on the rear of the LH cylinder head.
    48.  
    49. Install the special tool.
    50.  
    51. Tighten the bolts.
    52.  
    53. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
    54.  
    55. Tighten the camshaft bolt.
    56.  
    57. Install the LH camshaft tensioner.
    58.  
    59. Install the roller followers.
    60.  
    61. Install the thermostat housing.
    62.  
    63. Install the accessory drive belt.
    64.  
    65. Install the fuel supply manifold.
    66.  
    67. Install the intake manifold.
    68.  
    69. Install the RH valve cover.
    70.  
    71. Install the LH valve cover.
