Before the linkage is adjusted, be sure the engine idle speed and anti-stall dashpot are properly adjusted.

    1. Position the transmission selector control lever in D position and loosen the trunion bolt. On 4ALD transmission, do not use the overdrive D position.
    2.

Make sure that the shift lever detent pawl is held against the rearward Drive detent stop during the linkage adjustment procedure.

    1. Position the transmission manual lever in the D position, by moving the bellcrank lever all the way rearward, then forward 3 detents.
    2.
    3. With the transmission selector lever/manual lever in the D position, apply light forward pressure to the shifter control tower arm while tightening the trunion bolt to 12-2 ft. lbs. Forward pressure on the shifter lower arm will ensure correct positioning within the D detent as noted in Step 1.
    4.

After adjustment, check for Park engagement. The control lever must move to the right when engaged in Park. Check the transmission control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to ensure correct detent transmission action. Readjust if necessary.

Fig. Fig. 4: Kickdown rod assembly and its adjustment points-C3 and C5

The engine should be at operating temperature whenever kickdown rod adjustments are made.

    1. Place a 6 lb. weight on the kickdown lever.
    2.
    3. Rotate the throttle to the wide open position.
    4.
    5. Insert a 0.06 in. (1.5mm) feeler gauge between the throttle lever and the adjusting screw.
    6.
    7. Rotate the adjusting screw until it makes contact with the feeler gauge. Remove the feeler gauge.
    8.
    9. After the adjustment has been made, a clearance of 0.001-0.008 in. (0.04-0.203mm) is acceptable.
    10.
    11. Remove the weight from the kickdown lever.
    12.

Fig. Fig. 5: Kickdown cable and its adjusting points-2.3L and 2.9L EFI

The kickdown cable is self-adjusting over a tolerance range of 1 in. (4mm). If the cable requires readjustment, reset the by depressing the semi-circular metal tab on the self-adjuster mechanism and pulling the cable forward (toward the front of the vehicle) to the "Zero'' position setting. The cable will then automatically readjust to the proper length when kicked down.
