    Variable Camshaft Timing Oil Control Solenoid

    Operation



    The Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator system is used on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The CMP actuator system is used for a variety of engine performance enhancements. These enhancements include lower emission output through exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control, a wider engine torque range, improved gas mileage, and improved engine idle stability. The CMP actuator system accomplishes this by controlling the amount of intake and exhaust valve overlap.

    The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system is controlled by the control module. The control module sends a pulse width modulated 12-volt signal to each CMP actuator solenoid to control the amount of engine oil flow to a camshaft actuator passage. There are 2 different passages for oil to flow through, a passage for camshaft advance and a passage for camshaft retard. The camshaft actuator is attached to each camshaft and is hydraulically operated to change the angle of each camshaft relative to crankshaft position (CKP). Engine oil pressure (EOP), viscosity, temperature, and engine oil level can affect camshaft actuator performance.

    The control module calculates the optimum camshaft position through the following inputs:



    Engine speed
     
    Manifold absolute pressure (MAP)
     
    Throttle position indicated angle
     
    CKP
     
    CMP
     
    Engine load
     
    Barometric pressure (BARO)
     

    Removal & Installation



    2.4L Engine
    1. Remove the intake manifold cover.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connectors from the Camshaft Position (CMP) actuator solenoid valves.
    4.  
    5. Remove the exhaust CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve, if required.
    6.  
    7. Remove the intake (2) CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve, if required.
    8.  
    9. Inspect the solenoid valve O-ring seals for damage, replace as necessary.
    10.  

    To Install:

    1. Lubricate the solenoid valve O-ring seals with clean engine oil.
    2.  
    3. Install the intake CMP actuator solenoid valves and bolts, tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the engine harness electrical connector to the appropriate CMP actuator solenoid valves.
    6.  
    7. Install the intake manifold cover.

    3.6L Engine
    Left Side
    1. Remove the engine mount strut bracket.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the bank 2 intake camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve.
    4.  
    5. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt.
    6.  
    7. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    8.  
    9. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid valve seal for damage and replace as necessary.
    10.  

    To Install:

    1. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid valve seal for damage. Replace the seal if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Install the CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    4.  
    5. Install the CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the bank 2 intake CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    8.  
    9. Install the engine mount strut bracket.
    10.  

    Right Side
    1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    2.  
    3. For Intake actuator sensor remove the air conditioning (A/C) line push pin retainer and reposition the line out of the way.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the bank 1 exhaust camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve.
    6.  
    7. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt.
    8.  
    9. Remove the CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    10.  
    11. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid valve seal and replace as necessary.
    12.  

    To Install:

    1. Inspect the CMP actuator solenoid valve seal for damage. Replace the seal if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Install the CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    4.  
    5. Install the CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the bank 1 exhaust CMP actuator solenoid valve.
    8.  
    9. For Intake actuator sensor install the air conditioning (A/C) line and push pin retainer.
    10.  
    11. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    12.  

    Testing

    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the CMP actuator solenoid harness connector at the CMP actuator solenoid
      NOTE
      Ensure component is tested at 20°C (68°F).

    2.  
    3. Test for 4.6-7.5 ohms of resistance between the high control terminal A and the low reference terminal B of the CMP actuator solenoid.
    4.  
    5. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
