    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    Front Sensor
    1990 vehicles
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Detach the sensor connector. Cut the wire retaining strap, if necessary.
    4.  
    5. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    6.  
    7. On Eldorado and Seville, disengage the sensor cable grommet from the wheelwell pass-through hole.
    8.  
    9. Remove the sensor cable from the brackets/retainers.
    10.  
    11. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor.
    12.  
    13. Inspect the sensor face for accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease or other contaminants and clean as necessary. Make sure the sensor face shows no evidence of damage from toothed sensor ring contact.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Coat the sensor with anti-corrosion compound 1052856 or equivalent, where the sensor will contact the knuckle.
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor with the mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm) on Deville and Fleetwood or 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm) on Eldorado and Seville.
    4.  
    5. Position and install the cable in the grommets, brackets and retainers, as necessary. The cable must be secure in the retainers and clear of moving parts. The cable must not be pulled too tight.
    6.  
    7. Connect the sensor to the wiring harness.
    8.  
    9. Install the wheel and tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    3. Working under the hood, detach the wheel speed sensor connector.
    4.  
    5. Cut the strap retaining the sensor cable.
    6.  
    7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the sensor cable from the brackets.
    10.  
    11. Remove the retaining bolt and remove the sensor.
    12.  
    13. Inspect the sensor face for accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease or other contaminants and clean as necessary. Make sure the sensor face shows no evidence of damage from toothed sensor ring contact.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Coat the sensor with anti-corrosion compound 1052856 or equivalent, where the sensor will contact the knuckle.

    3. Route the sensor cable and install the retainers. The cable must be secure in the retainers and clear of moving parts. The cable must not be pulled too tight.

    5. Position the sensor in the knuckle and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm).

    7. Lower the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Connect the sensor connector and install a new retaining strap.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.
    12.  

    1992-93 Deville And Fleetwood

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Detach the sensor connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Clean all dirt from the sensor housing area.
    6.  
    7. Gently pry the slinger from the speed sensor assembly. Discard the used slinger.
    8.  
    9. Carefully pry the speed sensor from the bearing assembly. Do not allow dirt to enter the bearing when the sensor is removed. Do not add lubricant through the sensor opening; the bearing is permanently lubricated.
    10.  
    11. Inspect the bearing and sensor for any signs of rust or water intrusion; if such damage is found, replace the hub and bearing assembly. Do not clean the grease from the toothed sensor ring; grease does not affect operation of the sensor.
    12.  
    13. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to remove sealant from the outer diameter of the bearing hub.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Apply a sealant, 620 Loctite® or equivalent, to the groove in the outer diameter of the bearing hub.
    2.  
    3. Place the hub and bearing on tool J-38764-4 or equivalent, to prevent damage to the studs.
    4.  
    5. Install the sensor using a press and tool J-38764-1 or equivalent.
    6.  
    7. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
    8.  
    9. Connect the sensor wiring connector and connect the negative battery cable.
    10.  

    1991 Eldorado and Seville

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Detach the sensor connector at the strut tower.
    4.  
    5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Disengage the sensor cable grommet from the wheelwell pass-through hole and remove the sensor cable from the retainers.
    8.  
    9. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and remove the sensor from the vehicle.
    10.  
    11. Inspect the sensor face for accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease or other contaminants and clean as necessary.

    To install:

    1. Coat the sensor with anti-corrosion compound 1052856 or equivalent, where the sensor will contact the knuckle.

    5. Position the sensor in the knuckle and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

    7. Lower the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Connect the sensor connector and connect the negative battery cable.
    10.  

    1992-98 Eldorado and Seville; 1994-98 Deville

    NOTE
    The front wheel speed sensors are integrated with the hub and bearing assembly. The sensor may be replaced and is serviced separately from the hub and bearing assembly. The sensor must be replaced whenever it is separated from the hub or bearing. Do not attempt to reuse the sensor once it is removed

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Detach the wheel speed sensor connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
    6.  
    7. Clean all dirt from the sensor housing area.
    8.  
    9. Gently pry the slinger from the speed sensor assembly. Discard the used slinger.
    10.  
    11. Carefully pry the speed sensor from the bearing assembly. Do not allow dirt to enter the bearing when the sensor is removed. Do not add lubricant through the sensor opening; the bearing is permanently lubricated.
    12.  
    13. Inspect the bearing and sensor for any signs of rust or water intrusion; if damage is found, replace the hub and bearing assembly. Do not clean the grease from the toothed sensor ring; grease does not affect operation of the sensor.

    To install:

    3. Place the hub and bearing on tool J-38764-4 or equivalent, to prevent damage to the studs.

    5. Install the sensor using a press and tool J-38764-1 or equivalent.
    6.  
    7. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
    8.  
    9. Connect the sensor wiring connector and make sure the connector is clipped to the dust shield on the knuckle.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.

    Rear Sensor
    1990 Deville and Fleetwood
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Open the trunk and remove the side panel carpeting.
    4.  
    5. Detach the sensor connector, located forward of the shock tower.
    6.  
    7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the sensor cable from the bracket.
    10.  
    11. Remove the bracket bolts and the sensor bolt.
    12.  
    13. Carefully raise the bracket while removing the sensor.
    14.  
    15. Remove the 2 screws holding the sensor retainer and remove the retainer.
    16.  
    17. Remove the sensor cable and sensor.
    18.  
    19. Inspect the sensor face for accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease or other contaminants and clean as necessary. Make sure the sensor face shows no evidence of damage from toothed sensor ring contact.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Coat the sensor with anti-corrosion compound 1052856 or equivalent, where the sensor will contact the knuckle.
    2.  
    3. Route the sensor cable and install and retainers. The cable must be secure in the retainers and clear of moving parts. The cable must not be pulled too tight.
    4.  
    5. Carefully lift the bracket and install the sensor. Install the sensor bolt and tighten to 84 inch lbs. (9.5 Nm). Install the bracket bolts and tighten to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the sensor cable through the trunk opening.
    8.  
    9. Install the retainer with the 2 screws and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Connect the speed sensor to the harness and install the side panel carpeting. Connect the negative battery cable.

    1990 Eldorado and Seville
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Detach the sensor connector and remove the sensor cable from the retainer brackets.
    6.  
    7. Remove the sensor mounting bolts and remove the sensor.
    8.  
    9. Inspect the sensor face for accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease or other contaminants and clean as necessary. Make sure the sensor face shows no evidence of damage from toothed sensor ring contact.
    10.  

    To install:

    1. Coat the sensor with anti-corrosion compound 1052856 or equivalent, where the sensor will contact the knuckle. Position the sensor in the knuckle and install the mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor cable in the retainers. The cable must be secure in the retainers and clear of moving parts. The cable must not be pulled too tight.
    4.  
    5. Connect the sensor connector and lower the vehicle. Connect the negative battery cable.

    1991-93 Fleetwood and Deville
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Detach the wheel speed sensor connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hub and bearing assembly.
    6.  
    7. Clean the sensor housing of any dirt or debris.
    8.  
    9. Remove the screws holding the sensor and remove the sensor. Do not allow dirt to enter the bearing when the sensor is removed. Do not add lubricant through the sensor opening; the bearing is permanently lubricated.
    10.  
    11. Inspect the sensor ring and plate for any signs of contact or mechanical wear; if such damage is found, replace the hub and bearing assembly. Do not clean the grease from the toothed sensor ring; grease does not affect operation of the sensor.
    12.  

    To install:

    1. Inspect the O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor with the screws. Tighten the screws to 33 inch lbs. (3.7 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the hub and bearing assembly.
    6.  
    7. Connect the sensor wiring connector and connect the negative battery cable.

    1992-98 Eldorado and Seville; 1994-98 Deville

    The rear wheel speed sensor is an integral part of the rear hub and bearing assembly and cannot be serviced separately. Should a sensor fail, the entire hub and bearing assembly must be replaced.
