    Park/Neutral Position/Back-Up Light Switch

    The park/neutral position switch prevents the car from being started when the transmission is in any gear other than Park or Neutral.. When the transmission is in Reverse (with the engine running), the switch completes the back-up light circuit, illuminating the back-up lights.

    REPLACEMENT & ADJUSTMENT



    See Figure 1

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front floor console assembly.
    4.  
    5. Detach the electrical connector from the switch.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 attaching screws, then remove the switch from the vehicle.

    To install:
    1. If installing a new switch, perform the following:
      1. Place the transmission control shifter in the N position.
      2.  
      3. Align the tang on the switch into the slot on the transmission control.
      4.  
      5. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 19 inch lbs. (2.2 Nm).

    If installing a new park/neutral position switch and the switch holes will not align with the transmission control, make sure the transmission lever is in the N position. Do not rotate the switch. If it has been rotate and the pin is broken, the switch can be adjusted using the procedure for installing an original switch.

    1. If installing the original switch, perform the following:
      1. Place the transmission control shifter in the N position.
      2.  
      3. Align the tang on the switch into the slot on the transmission control.
      4.  
      5. Place the switch onto the transmission control shifter and loosely install the attaching screws.
      6.  
      7. Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.34mm) diameter gauge pin in the service adjustment hole, rotate the switch until the gauge pin drops to 19 / 32 in. (15mm), then tighten the attaching screws to 19 inch lbs. (2.2 Nm).

      9. Remove the gauge pin.

    3. Attach the electrical connector to the switch.

    5. Install the front floor console assembly.

    7. Connect the negative battery cable. Make sure the engine will only start with the ignition key in the P or N positions. If the engine will start in any other positions, re-adjust the switch.
