    2.
    3. Remove the timing chain (front) cover.
    4.
    5. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks punched on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are aligned to the marks on the engine block or timing chain dampener. This is the No. 4 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC).
    6.
    7. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts/screws.
    8.

Fig. Fig. 4: If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket using the special tool - 3.4L engine

    1. Install the camshaft sprocket assembly and timing chain assembly. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are aligned with the marks on the engine block.
    2.
    3. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    4.
    5. Install the timing chain dampener and tighten the retaining bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    6.
    7. Install the timing chain (front) cover.
    8.
    9. Connect the negative battery cable.
    10.

    3.8L Engine

    See Figure 5

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Remove the timing chain (front) cover.
    4.
    5. Align the timing marks on the sprockets so they are as close together as possible, as shown in the accompanying figure.
    6.

Fig. Fig. 5: Exploded view of the timing chain and sprockets and timing mark alignment - 3.8L engine

    1. Remove the timing chain dampener.
    2.
    3. Unfasten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt/screw, then pull the timing chain and sprocket from the camshaft.
    4.
    5. If necessary, remove the crankshaft sprocket. If the sprocket does not come off easily, a light blow on the edge of the sprocket with a plastic mallet should dislodge it.
    6.
    7. Clean the chain and sprockets. Inspect all components for damage, and replace as necessary.
    8.

    To install:
    1. If the pistons have been moved in the engine, perform the following:
      1. Turn the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
      2.
      3. Turn the camshaft so that, with the sprocket temporarily installed, the timing mark is straight down.
      4.

    2.
    3. Assemble the timing chain on the sprockets with the timing marks aligned. Install the timing chain and sprockets.
    4.
    5. Install the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt/screw and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees using tool J 36660 or equivalent torque angle meter.
    6.
    7. Install the timing chain dampener and tighten the retaining bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    8.
    9. Rotate the engine two revolutions then check to be sure the timing marks are aligned.
    10.
    11. Install the timing chain (front) cover.
    12.
    13. Connect the negative battery cable.
    14.

    5.7L Engine

    See Figures 6 through 11

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Remove the timing chain (front cover).
    4.
    5. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks punched on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets are aligned as shown in the accompanying figure.

    WARNING
Do not turn the crankshaft after the timing chain has been removed to prevent damage to the pistons or valves.

    1. Remove the water pump bearing retainer bolts/screws, then remove the water pump driveshaft assembly using tool J 39243 or equivalent driven gear remover. Remove and discard the O-ring from the driveshaft.
    2.
    3. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using gear remover J 5825-A, or equivalent.

Fig. Fig. 11: Crankshaft sprocket replacement - 5.7L engine

    1. If necessary, remove the crankshaft sprocket key.
    2.
    3. Clean the chain and sprockets. Inspect all components for damage, and replace as necessary.
    4.

    To install:
    1. If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket key.
    2.
    3. Install the crankshaft sprocket using gear installer J 5590 or equivalent.
    4.
    5. Instlal the water pump driveshaft assembly using driven gear installer J 39092, or equivalent.
    6.
    7. Install the water pump bearing retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    8.
    9. Install the camshaft sprocket and timing chain assembly. The camshaft sprocket and water pump driveshaft gears must mesh, or damage to the camshaft retainer may occur.
    10.
    11. Install the camshaft retaining bolts/screws. Make sure the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks align properly. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    12.
    13. Install a new O-ring to the water pump driveshaft using seal installer J 39089 or equivalent.
    14.
    15. Install the timing chain (front) cover.
    16.
    17. Connect the negative battery cable.
