    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    1964-66 Chevelle

    See Figure 1

    When servicing any components on the steering column, should any fasteners require replacement, be sure to use only nuts and bolts of the same size and grade as the original fasteners. Using screws that are slightly too long could prevent the column from the collapsing during a collision.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
    4.  
    5. On column shift cars, remove the shift lever retaining pin and the lever.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the column wiring harness from the chassis harness.
    8.  
    9. Remove the lower trim plate and the upper mast jacket clamp.
    10.  
    11. On automatic cars, remove the indicator retaining screw and the pointer.
    12.  
    13. Remove the three turn signal-to-housing screws.
    14.  
    15. Remove the turn signal switch, housing, and shift bowl from the steering column. Separate the switch from the wiring harness.
    16.  

    To install:
    1. Engage the switch to the wiring harness, then install the turn signal switch, housing, and shift bowl to the steering column.
    2.  

    Two different switch assemblies are used. Although the removal procedures are the same, the parts are not interchangeable.

    1. Install the three turn signal-to-housing screws.
    2.  
    3. On automatic cars, install the indicator pointer and retaining screw.
    4.  
    5. Install the lower trim plate and the upper mast jacket clamp.
    6.  
    7. Connect the column wiring harness to the chassis harness.
    8.  
    9. On column shift cars, install the shift lever and retaining pin.
    10.  
    11. Align the marks made earlier and install the steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. Connect the negative battery cable.

    1967-68

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the signal switch wiring from the wiring harness under the instrument panel.
    4.  
    5. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel. For details, refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
    6.  
    7. If applicable, remove the shift lever.
    8.  
    9. Remove the four-way flasher lever arm.
    10.  
    11. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the dial indicator housing and lamp assembly from the column.
    12.  
    13. Remove the mast jacket lower trim cover.
    14.  
    15. Remove the C-ring and washers from the upper steering shaft.
    16.  
    17. Loosen the signal switch screws, move the switch counterclockwise and remove it from the mast jacket.
    18.  
    19. Remove the upper support bracket assembly.
    20.  


    WARNING
    Support the column; do not allow it to be suspended by the lower reinforcement only.

    1. Remove the wiring harness protector and clip, and then reinstall the support bracket and finger-tighten the bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the shift lever bowl from the mast jacket and disconnect it from the wiring harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove the three lockplate screws, being careful not to lose the three springs.
    6.  
    7. Disassemble the switch and upper bearing housing from the switch cover.
    8.  

    To install:
    1. Insert the upper bearing housing and switch assembly into the switch cover.
    2.  
    3. Align the switch and bearing housing with the mounting holes in the cover and install the three mounting screws.
    4.  
    5. Slide the springs onto the screws and install the lockplate over the springs. Tighten the screws three turns into the lockplate.
    6.  
    7. Position the switch wire through the shift lever bowl and place the upper end assembly on top of the bowl.
    8.  
    9. Place the shift lever down and signal switch assembly on top of the jacket, insert the lockplate tangs into the slots.
    10.  
    11. Push down on the cover assembly and turn clockwise to lock the assembly into position.
    12.  
    13. Tighten the signal mounting screws.
    14.  
    15. Remove the mast jacket support bracket, then install the wiring, wiring cover and clip, and install and tighten the support brackets.
    16.  
    17. Install a C-ring onto the shaft.
    18.  
    19. If equipped, install the dial indicator and lamp assembly on the column.
    20.  
    21. Install the mast jacket lower trim cover if so equipped.
    22.  
    23. Install the four-way flasher knob and the turn signal lever.
    24.  
    25. If applicable, install the shift lever.
    26.  
    27. Align the marks made earlier, then install the steering wheel.
    28.  
    29. Connect the wiring, then connect the negative battery cable.
    30.  

    1969 and Later

    See Figures 2, 3 and 4

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel. For details, please refer to the procedure earlier in this section.

    5. Remove the trim cover from the column.
    6.  
    7. Remove the steering column cover from the shaft by removing the three screws or by prying it out with a screwdriver (1976 and later models).
    8.  
    9. Use a compressing tool, such as No. J-23653, to compress and hold the lockplate. With the plate compressed, pry out and discard the snapring from its shaft groove.
    10.  
    11. Slide the cancelling cam, spring, and washer off the shaft.
    12.  
    13. Remove turn signal lever.
    14.  
    15. Push the four-way flasher knob in and unscrew it.
    16.  
    17. Remove the three switch mounting screws.
    18.  
    19. Pull switch connector out of the bracket and wrap it with tape to prevent it from snagging. Connect a length of twine or mechanic's wire to the connector. When the connector is pulled through the column, leave the twine or wire in the column in order to pull the new switch harness into position during installation.
    20.  
    21. If applicable, place tilt columns in the low and remove the harness cover.
    22.  
    23. Remove the switch and harness assembly from the steering column.
    24.  

    To install:
    1. Install the switch and harness assembly to the steering column. Use the length of twine or wire to pull the harness through the column and into position.
    2.  
    3. If applicable, place tilt columns in the low and install the harness cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the switch connector to the bracket.
    6.  
    7. Install and tighten the three switch mounting screws.
    8.  
    9. Push the four-way flasher knob in and secure it.
    10.  
    11. Install the turn signal lever.
    12.  

    When installing the cancelling cam, spring, and washer, make sure that the switch is in neutral and that the flasher knob is out.

    1. Install the cancelling cam, spring, and washer to the shaft.
    2.  
    3. Use a compressing tool, such as No. J-23653, to compress and hold the lockplate. With the plate compressed, install a new snapring to the shaft groove, then remove the compressing tool.
    4.  
    5. If applicable, install the steering column cover to the shaft and secure using the retaining screws.
    6.  
    7. Install the trim cover to the column.
    8.  
    9. Align the marks made earlier and install the steering wheel.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.
    12.
