REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Transmission Selector Lever Assembly
1981-95 PICK-UP, 1985-91 TROOPER AND 1989-94 AMIGO MODELS
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Move the selector lever to the N position.
- If necessary for access to the underside of the vehicle, apply the parking brake, block the rear wheels, raise and support the front of the vehicle safely on jackstands.
- From under the vehicle, pull out the cotter pin and washers from the end of the control rod, then disconnect the control rod at the selector lever side.
- From inside of the vehicle, remove the 3 screws holding the console cover. Remove the cover from the select lever assembly.
- Disengage the indicator light and inhibitor switch wiring at the connector.
- Remove the 4 bolts holding the shift lever assembly and remove the shift lever assembly from the vehicle.
- Position the selector lever assembly onto the floor of the vehicle. Install and tighten the 4 mounting bolts until secure.
- Attach the inhibitor switch and indicator light wiring to the connector.
- Situate the cover onto the lever assembly and install the 3 mounting screws.
- From under the vehicle, attach the control rod to the selector lever, install the washers and install a new cotter pin. Make sure to bend the ends of the cotter pin over.
- If necessary, adjust the shift linkage, as described earlier in this section.
- Lower the vehicle, set the selector lever in the P position and remove the rear wheel blocks, if necessary.
- Connect the negative battery cable.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the transfer control lever knob.
- Remove the front console retaining screws, then pull the console up far enough to disengage the electrical wiring harness connectors. Remove the front console from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the shift lock cable from the selector lever assembly side.
- Disengage the wiring harness connectors from the selector lever assembly.
- Disconnect the shift control rod from the selector lever assembly.
- Remove the selector lever assembly hold-down bolts and remove the assembly from the vehicle.
- Situate the selector lever assembly on the floor of the vehicle and install the hold-down bolts until secure.
- Attach the shift control rod to the selector lever assembly and tighten the nut until secure.
- Attach the wiring harness connectors to the selector lever assembly.
- Attach the shift lock cable to the selector lever assembly.
- Adjust the shift lock cable and the shift linkage, as described earlier in this section.
- Position the front console over the selector lever assembly and connect the wiring harness. Install the front cover attaching screws until snug.
- Install the transfer control lever knob.
- Connect the negative battery cable.

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Move the selector lever to the N position.
- If necessary for access to the underside of the vehicle, apply the parking brake, block the rear wheels, raise and support the front of the vehicle safely on jackstands.
- For 1981-91 models, pull out the cotter pin and washers from the end of the control rod, then disconnect the control rod at the selector lever side.
- For 1992-96 models, remove the control rod-to-selector lever retaining nut, then disconnect the rod from the selector lever.
- From the transmission end of the rod, remove the control rod outer nut (adjusting nut), then remove the control rod from the transmission shift lever.
- Install the transmission end of the control rod into the transmission shift lever and temporarily install the outer nut.
- Attach the control rod to the selector lever, install the washers and install a new cotter pin. Make sure to bend the ends of the cotter pin over.
- If necessary, adjust the shift linkage, as described earlier in this section. Tighten the control rod outer nut until secure.
- Lower the vehicle, set the selector lever in the P position and remove the rear wheel blocks, if necessary.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
