    V8 Engines
    A-Bank
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Valve cover
       
      Intake manifold
       
      Radiator hoses
       
      Heater hoses
       
      Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
       
      Coolant outlet pipe
       
      Catalytic converter
       
      Crankshaft damper
       
      Front cover
       
      Variable Valve Timing (VVT) bushing carrier
       
      Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
       

    6.  
    7. Rotate the crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the driveplate is visible through the access hole.
    8.  
    9. Confirm that the timing flat on each camshaft is uppermost. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft one full turn.
    10.  
    11. Install the crankshaft setting peg JD 216 to the crankshaft position sensor location.
    12.  
    13. Install the camshaft locking tool JD 215 to the A-Bank camshafts.
    14.  
    15. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate
       
      Primary timing chain
       
      VVT unit, exhaust camshaft sprocket and secondary timing chain
       
      Secondary timing chain tensioner
       
      Secondary timing chain guide
       

    16.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Timing chain tensioners, prepare them for installation by using a paperclip or other wire to unseat the check valves and compressing the pistons into their bores
       
      Secondary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
       
      Secondary timing chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
       
      VVT, secondary timing chain, and exhaust cam sprocket
       
      Primary timing chain
       
      Primary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
       
      Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate. Tighten the bolts to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
       
      Primary timing chain slack, eliminate it by placing a wedge between the primary timing chain tensioner and the guide shoe
       
      Secondary timing chain, tension it by applying counterclockwise force to the exhaust camshaft sprocket
       
      Exhaust and intake VVT sprocket bolts. Torque them to 85-92 ft. lbs. (115-125 Nm).
       

    2.  
    3. Remove the tools and wedges.
    4.  
    5. Install or connect the following:

      CKP sensor
       
      VVT bushing carrier
       
      Front cover
       
      Crankshaft damper
       
      Catalytic converter
       
      Coolant outlet pipe
       
      ECT sensor connector
       
      Heater hoses
       
      Radiator hoses
       
      Intake manifold
       
      Valve cover
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  
    7. Fill the cooling system.
    8.  
    9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    10.

    B-Bank
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Valve cover
       
      Intake manifold
       
      Radiator hoses
       
      Heater hoses
       
      Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
       
      Coolant outlet pipe
       
      Catalytic converter
       
      Crankshaft damper
       
      Front cover
       
      Variable Valve Timing (VVT) bushing carrier
       
      Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
       

    6.  
    7. Rotate the crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the driveplate is visible through the access hole.

    9. Confirm that the timing flat on each camshaft is uppermost. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft one full turn.

    11. Install the crankshaft setting peg JD 216 to the crankshaft position sensor location.
    12.  
    13. Install the camshaft locking tool JD 215 to the B-Bank camshafts.
    14.  
    15. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate
       
      Primary timing chain
       
      VVT unit, exhaust camshaft sprocket and secondary timing chain
       
      Secondary timing chain tensioner
       
      Secondary timing chain guide
       

    16.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Heater hoses

      Intake manifold
       
      Valve cover
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  
    7. Fill the cooling system.
    8.  
    9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    10.  

    2.5L & 3.0L Engines
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Accessory drive belt
       
      Valve cover
       
      Timing chain cover
       
      Spark plugs
       
      Crankshaft position sensor pulse wheel
       

    4.  
    5. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer
    6.  
    7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft keyway is at the 7 O´clock position, the alignment mark on the right-hand intake camshaft sprocket is at the 1 O´clock position and the alignment mark on the right-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket is at the 8 O´clock position.
    8.  
    9. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer
       
      Right-hand timing chain tensioner
       
      Right-hand timing chain outer guide
       
      Right-hand timing chain
       
      Right-hand timing chain inner guide
       
      Crankshaft outer sprocket
       

    10.  
    11. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer.
    12.  
    13. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft keyway is at the 11 O´clock position, the alignment mark on the left-hand intake camshaft sprocket is at the 9 O´clock position and the alignment mark on the left-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket is at the 2 O´clock position.
    14.  
    15. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer
       
      Left-hand timing chain tensioner
       
      Left-hand timing chain inner guide
       
      Left-hand timing chain
       
      Left-hand timing chain outer guide
       
      Crankshaft inner sprocket

    To install:

    1. Remove the right-hand intake camshaft and right-hand exhaust camshaft bearing caps evenly.
    2.  
    3. Rotate the right-hand intake camshaft clockwise until the camshaft sprocket alignment mark is at the 5 o-clock position and rotate the right-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket clockwise until the camshaft sprocket alignment mark is at the 12 o-clock position.

    NOTE
    Do not install the cylinder head camshaft journal thrust caps until the camshaft journal caps are installed or damage to the thrust caps may occur.

    1. Lubricate the camshafts and the camshaft bearing caps.
    2.  
    3. Install the right-hand intake camshaft and right-hand exhaust camshaft bearing caps in their original position.
    4.  
    5. Install the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts evenly and tighten in sequence to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the crankshaft inner sprocket.
    8.  
    9. Install the left-hand timing chain outer guide. Tighten bolts starting with inner bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Make sure the crankshaft keyway is at the 11 O´clock position, the alignment mark on the left-hand intake camshaft sprocket is at the 9 O´clock position and the alignment mark on the left-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket is at the 2 O´clock position.
    12.  
    13. The timing chain alignment marks should be correctly positioned to the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket alignment marks.
    14.  
    15. The timing chain slack is on the tensioned side of the timing chain.
    16.  
    17. Install the left-hand timing chain.
    18.  
    19. Install the left-hand timing chain inner guide.
    20.  
    21. Place the left-hand timing chain tensioner in a vise.
    22.  


    NOTE
    During timing chain tensioner compression, do not release the ratchet stem until the timing chain tensioner piston is fully bottomed in its bore or damage to the ratchet stem will result.


    NOTE
    Using a suitable tool, hold the left-hand timing chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem.

    1. Slowly compress the left-hand timing chain tensioner and insert a paper clip to hold tensioner piston bottomed in bore.
    2.  


    NOTE
    The retaining tool must remain in the timing chain tensioner until the timing chain tensioner is installed to the engine with the piston bottomed in the bore.

    1. Install the left-hand timing chain tensioner and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Release the tension in the left-hand timing chain tensioner.
    4.  
    5. Remove retaining tool.
    6.  
    7. Make sure the left-hand timing chain alignment marks have remained correctly positioned to the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket alignment marks.
    8.  
    9. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer.
    10.  
    11. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the crankshaft keyway is at the 3 o-clock position.
    12.  
    13. Remove the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer.
    14.  
    15. Install the crankshaft outer sprocket.
    16.  
    17. Install the right hand timing chain outer guide. Tighten bolts starting with inner bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    18.  
    19. Make sure the crankshaft keyway is at the 3 o-clock position, the alignment mark on the right-hand intake camshaft sprocket is at the 5 o-clock position and the alignment mark on the right-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket is at the 12 o-clock position.
    20.  
    21. Make sure the timing chain alignment marks are correctly positioned to the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket alignment marks.
    22.  
    23. The timing chain slack is on the tensioned side of the timing chain.
    24.  
    25. Install the right-hand timing chain.
    26.  
    27. Install the right-hand timing chain outer guide.
    28.  
    29. Place the left-hand timing chain tensioner in a vise.

    NOTE

    9. Make sure all the timing chain alignment marks are in the positions shown.
    10.  
    11. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer.
    12.  
    13. Check the engine valve timing is correctly set.
    14.  
    15. Rotate the crankshaft two complete turns clockwise.
    16.  
    17. Remove the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and washer.
    18.  
    19. Install the CKP sensor pulse wheel with the teeth pointing outwards.
    20.  
    21. Install the spark plugs.
    22.  
    23. Install the engine front cover, valve covers and accessory drive belt.
    24.  
    25.  
    26. Connect the negative battery cable.
    27.  
    28. Fill the cooling system.
    29.  
    30. Start the engine and check for leaks.
