    Removal & Installation



    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Raise vehicle and properly support the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake drums.
    8.  
    9. Remove the drain plug and drain gear oil into suitable container.
    10.  
    11. Remove the axle shafts.
    12.  
    13. Remove the ABS sensor.
    14.  
    15. Using a line wrench, disconnect brake line from differential housing splitter block.
    16.  
    17. Put matching marks on the driveshaft flange and the companion flange on the front drive assembly.
      CAUTION
      For matching mark, use paint. Never damage the driveshaft flange and companion flange on the front drive.

    19. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
    20.  
    21. Remove emergency brake cable restraining strap.
    22.  
    23. Using a line wrench, disconnect brake line from each brake assembly.
    24.  
    25. Position the backing plate with attached brake assembly aside and tie it to the chassis with wire.
    26.  
    27. Support the axle housing with a jack.
    28.  
    29. Remove both shock absorber lower mounting bolts.
    30.  
    31. Remove both lower trailing link-to rear axle housing bolts.
    32.  
    33. Remove the upper bolt.
    34.  
    35. Remove the Panhard bar-to-rear axle housing bolt.
    36.  
    37. Lower jack and remove coil springs and rubber seats.
    38.  
    39. With axle housing removed, place the assembly on a suitable work surface.
    40.  
    41. Remove the differential carrier.
    42.  
    43. Remove brake line from housing.
    44.  
    45. Remove the breather.
    46.  

    To install:

    1. Attach brake line to housing.
    2.  
    3. Apply RTV sealant (or equivalent) and install differential carrier assembly. Tighten M8 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) and tighten M10 bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Using a suitable jack, place rear axle housing in preliminary installation position and install coil springs with upper and lower rubber seats.
    6.  
    7. Raise the housing up into final mounting position.
    8.  
    9. Attach the Panhard bar to axle hosing and tighten bolt to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Attach the upper trailing links and tighten the bolts 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Attach both lower trailing links and tighten bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
    14.  
    15. Attach both shock absorbers and tighten bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
    16.  
    17. Place brake assembles in mounting position, install mounting nuts and tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    18.  
    19. Install the breather.
    20.  
    21. Using a line wrench, attach brake line to both brake assemblies.
    22.  
    23. Attach emergency brake cable restraining strap to the chassis.
    24.  
    25. Install both axles.
    26.  
    27. Using a line wrench, attach the brake line to rear axle housing splitter block.
    28.  
    29. Install the ABS sensor.
    30.  
    31. Align the reference marks and install driveshaft.
    32.  
    33. Fill differential with oil to filler hole level.
    34.  
    35. Install the filler plug with a new washer. Tighten the filler plug to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    36.  
    37. Install the brake drums.
    38.  
    39. Following proper procedures, bleed the brake system.
    40.  
    41. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
    42.  
    43. Lower the vehicle.
    44.  
    45. Connect the negative battery cable.
