    Adjustment



    Parking brake shoe adjustment is part of the parking brake shoe installation procedure.

    1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

    5. Remove the brake adjusting hole cover from the backing plate.
    6.  
    7. Turn the brake adjuster screw to expand the parking brake shoe and linings until they drag against the drum-in-hat rotor.
    8.  
    9. Back off the brake adjuster screw until no drag is evident.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
      NOTE
      If the brake disc binds on the parking brake shoe and lining, remove the adjustment hole access plug and contract the parking brake shoe and lining.

    5. Remove the brake disc
    6.  
    7. Remove the upper spring
    8.  
    9. Remove the retainers
    10.  
    11. Remove the adjuster
    12.  
    13. Remove the lower spring
      NOTE
      Replace the parking brake shoes if the linings have worn to within 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) of the shoe.

    15. Remove the parking brake shoes
    16.  
    17. Remove the retaining pins
    18.  
    19. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply brake lube to the points where the shoes contact the backing plate.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
      NOTE
      Make sure the parking brake control is fully released.

    3. Relieve the tension on the parking brake system.
      1. Pull the front parking brake cable and conduit.
      2.  
      3. Insert a suitable retainer.
      4.

    5. Raise and support the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
      WARNING
      Do not let the rear disc brake caliper hang from caliper hose, use wire to hang it aside.

    9. Remove the rear brake disc caliper.
    10.  
    11. Remove the rear brake disc.
    12.  
    13. Remove the brake shoe retracting spring.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    16.  
    17. Remove the brake adjuster screw.
    18.  
    19. Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down springs.
    20.  
    21. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    22.  
    23. Inspect the components for excessive wear or damage and install new components as required.
    24.  

    To install:


    NOTE
    Lubricate the brake shoe contact point before installation of rear brake shoes using Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound or an equivalent silicone compound meeting Ford specifications.

    1. Install the rear brake shoes and linings along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    2.  
    3. Install the brake shoe hold-down springs.
    4.  
    5. Install the brake adjuster screw.
    6.  
    7. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    8.  
    9. Install the outboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    10.  
    11. Use a brake adjusting gauge to measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
    12.  
    13. Use a brake adjusting gauge to set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) less than the inside diameter to the drum portion of the rear brake disc.
    14.  
    15. Install the rear brake disc.
    16.  
    17. Install the rear disc brake caliper.
    18.  
    19. Clean the wheel hub mounting surface.
    20.  
    21. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
    22.  
    23. Apply tension to the parking brake cable system.
      1. Hold the front parking brake cable and conduit taut.
      2.  
      3. Remove the retainer from the parking brake control.
      4.

    25. Check the operation of the parking brake.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
      NOTE
      One parking brake shoe kit contains the linings required for both the left and right side.


      NOTE
      Make sure the parking brake control is fully released.

    3. Relieve the tension on the parking brake cable.
      1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on the hoist.
      2.  
      3. Remove the left A-pillar lower trim panel.
      4.  
      5. With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling down on the intermediate cable at the cable-to-cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop and a 4 mm (0.15 in.) x 150 mm (5.9 in.) retainer pin can be inserted.
      6.  
      7. Disconnect the cable at the cable-to-cable union.
      8.

    5. Remove the rear brake disc.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake shoe adjuster screw.
    8.  
    9. Remove the brake shoe adjuster screw spring.
    10.  
    11. Remove the 2 brake shoe hold down springs and 2 pins.
    12.  
    13. Remove the brake shoe retracting spring and the parking brake shoes.
    14.  

    To install:


    NOTE
    Lubricate the parking brake shoes where the shoe contacts the wear pad on the backing plate.

    1. Position the parking brake shoes and attach the retracting spring.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 brake shoe hold-down pins and springs.
    4.  
    5. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
      NOTE
      Completely retract the parking brake adjusting screw before installation.

    6.  
    7. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw.
    8.  
    9. Measure the inside diameter of the parking brake drum.
    10.  
    11. Adjust the parking brake shoe clearance to 0.6 mm (0.02 in.) less than the inside diameter of the parking brake drum.
    12.  
    13. Make sure that the parking brake shoes are correctly centered by measuring across the center point of the shoes.
    14.  
    15. Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster wheel to achieve the correct parking brake shoe-to-brake disc clearance.
    16.  
    17. Install the rear brake disc.
    18.  
    19. Reload the tension on the parking brake cable.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

    3. Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the rear parking brake cable at the parking brake intermediate cable.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the parking brake lever.
    8.  
    9. Remove the outboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    10.  
    11. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
    12.  
    13. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake adjuster screw.
    16.  
    17. Remove the parking brake shoe and linings along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    18.  
    19. Inspect the components for excessive wear or damage and install new as required.

    To install:


    NOTE
    Make sure the inboard brake shoe retracting spring is attached to the parking brake shoe.

    1. Install the left parking brake shoe and brake shoe hold-down spring, along with the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    2.  
    3. Connect the inboard brake shoe retracting spring to the right parking brake shoe, and install the right parking brake shoe and the brake shoe hold-down spring.
    4.  
    5. Install the brake adjuster screw.
    6.  
    7. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
      NOTE
      The outboard brake shoe retracting spring mounts above the inboard brake shoe retracting spring.

    8.  
    9. Install the outboard brake shoe retracting spring.
    10.  
    11. Connect the parking brake cable at the parking brake lever.
    12.  
    13. Connect the rear parking brake cable at the parking brake intermediate cable.
    14.  
    15. Install the rear disc brake rotor.
    16.  
    17. Use a brake adjusting gauge to set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
    18.  
    19. Burnish the parking brake shoe and linings, in a safe manner:
      1. Accelerate the vehicle to 40 km/h (25 mph).
      2.  
      3. Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL.
      4.  
      5. Slowly apply the parking brake control to approximately one-half to three-quarters of its travel.
      6.  
      7. Allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop.
      8.  
      9. Release the parking brake.
      10.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the brake disc.
    4.  
    5. Release the tension on the parking brake system.
      1. Remove the left lower A-pillar trim panel.
      2.  
      3. With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling down on the intermediate cable at the cable-to-cable union until the parking brake control sector rotates to its stop and a 4 mm (0.15 in.) x 150 mm (5.9 in.) retainer pin can be inserted.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the cable at the cable-to-cable union.
        NOTE
        Make sure the cable-to-cable union is connected to the front and rear cable before removing the brake control retaining pin, and the cable tension is reloaded slowly.

    7. Separate the parking brake cables at the parking brake equalizer.
    8.  
    9. Release the parking brake cable from the left and right parking brake bracket assembly.
    10.  
    11. Rotate the parking brake cable 90 degrees to release it from the parking brake actuating lever.
    12.  
    13. Remove the 2 brake shoe hold-down clips and the 2 retaining pins.
    14.  
    15. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and the adjusting spring.
    16.  
    17. Remove the outboard brake shoes and the retracting spring.
    18.  
    19. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Inspect the components for excessive wear or damage and install new as required. To reload the tension on the parking brake cable, reverse the release procedure.
