    Removal & Installation



    Refer to the illustrations for component locations and torque values.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
    4.  
    5. Remove the transverse member.
      NOTE
      Support the engine using and engine support tool before removing the engine mount member.

    6.  
    7. Remove the engine mount member.
    8.  
    9. Remove the No. 1 engine mount nut and bolt.
    10.  
    11. Remove the pressure pipe and return hose.
    12.  
    13. Remove the intermediate shaft bolt.
    14.  
    15. Remove the tie-rod end ball joint.
    16.  
    17. Remove the lower arm ball joint bolt.
    18.  
    19. Support the crossmember using a jack and remove the bolts and nuts.
    20.  
    21. Remove the crossmember and steering gear assembly.

    23. Remove the stabilizer control link.
    24.  
    25. Remove the stabilizer bracket.

    27. Remove the stabilizer bushing.

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following:
      1. Apply rubber grease to the inside surface of the stabilizer bushing.
      2.  
      3. Align the bushing with the installation mark on the stabilizer bar.
      4.  
      5. Install the stabilizer bracket as shown.

    3. Inspect and adjust the wheel alignment.

    CAUTION
    Performing the following procedures without first removing the ABS wheel-speed sensor may possibly cause an open circuit in the harness if it is pulled by mistake. Before performing the following procedure, remove the ABS wheel-speed sensor (axle side) and fix it to an appropriate place where the sensor will not be pulled by mistake while servicing the vehicle.

    1. Remove the stabilizer bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the stabilizer bushing.
    4.  
    5. Remove the stabilizer.
    6.  
    7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
      NOTE
      Align the bushing with the positioning bushing on the stabilizer.

    8.  

    1. On models with a manual transaxle, remove the change control rod and extension bar.
    2.  
    3. Remove the splash shield.
    4.  
    5. Remove the transverse member.
    6.  
    7. Remove the power steering return and pressure hoses.
    8.  
    9. Remove the intermediate shaft bolt.
    10.  
    11. Support the engine with a suitable engine support device and remove the engine mount.
    12.  
    13. Remove the No. 1 engine mount bolt.
    14.  
    15. Remove the control arm to lower shock assembly bolt.
    16.  
    17. Support the crossmember using a jack and remove the crossmember bolts and nuts.
    18.  
    19. Lower and remove the crossmember.
    20.  
    21. Remove the stabilizer control link.
    22.  
    23. Remove the stabilizer bracket.
    24.  
    25. Remove the stabilizer bushing.
    26.  
    27. Remove the stabilizer.
    28.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following:
      1. Apply rubber grease to the inside surface of the stabilizer bushing.
      2.  
      3. Align the bushing with the inside of positioning plate on the stabilizer bar.
      4.  
      5. Install the stabilizer bracket as shown.

    17. Remove the stabilizer bracket.
    18.  
    19. Remove the stabilizer bushing.
    20.  
    21. Remove the stabilizer.

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of removal, please note the following:
      1. Apply rubber grease to the inside surface of the stabilizer bushing.
      2.  
      3. Align the bushing with the inside of positioning plate on the stabilizer bar.
      4.  
      5. Install the stabilizer bracket as shown.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Detach the steering shaft from the steering gear and linkage.
    4.  
    5. Remove the power steering pipe bracket.
    6.  
    7. Remove the stabilizer control link.
    8.  
    9. Support the front crossmember using a jack and remove the front crossmember bracket.
    10.  
    11. Remove the No. 1 engine mount center bolt.
    12.  
    13. Detach the silencer hangers on the middle pipe from the front crossmember.
    14.  
    15. Lower the front crossmember slowly approx. 90 mm {3.5 in} and remove the front stabilizer .component.
    16.  
    17. Secure the stabilizer bracket flange using a vise.
    18.  
    19. Remove the front stabilizer.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Apply grease to the stabilizer bushing.
    2.  
    3. Install the stabilizer bracket using a vise
    4.  
    5. Widen the stabilizer bushing opening 0.7-1 inch (16-26 mm) and install the bushing to the front stabilizer as shown in the illustration.
    6.  
    7. Install the remaining components in the reverse of removal
    8.  
    9. Tighten the bolts in order indicated in the illustration.

    10.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the under cover and splash shield.
    4.  
    5. Remove the transverse member bolts and the transverse member.
    6.  
    7. Remove the front crossmember as follows:
      1. Remove the stabilizer bar nut.
      2.  
      3. Remove the front lower arm front and rear ball joints from the knuckle.
      4.  
      5. Remove the front shock absorber lower bolt.
      6.  
      7. Remove the No. 1 engine mount center bolt.
        WARNING
        Support the crossmember with a suitable jack making sure it is securely damaged or it could fall causing injury or damage.

      8.  
      9. Support the crossmember with a jack and remove the crossmember bracket.
      10.  
      11. Remove the crossmember assembly retainers and lower the jack to remove the crossmember.

    11. Remove the stabilizer bracket.

    13. Remove the stabilizer front stabilizer bushing and stabilizer,

    To install:

    1. Apply grease to the stabilizer bushing.
    2.  
    3. Align the bushing with the inside of positioning plate on the stabilizer bar.
    4.  
    5. Install the stabilizer bracket.
    6.  
    7. Install the remaining components in the reverse of removal
    8.  
    9. Tighten the bolts in order indicated in the illustration.
    10.  

    1.5L, 1.6L & 1.8L Engines
    1998-00
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Cross member
       
      Sway bar control link
       
      Sway bar bracket
       
      Sway bar bushing
       
      Sway bar
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Sway bar and bushings
       
      Sway bar brackets and torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
       
      Sway bar control links and torque the nuts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
       
      Cross member
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  

    2.0L & 2.5L Engines
    1998-00
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Cross member
       
      Sway bar control links
       
      Sway bar brackets and bushings
       
      Sway bar
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Sway bar
       
      Sway bar bushings and brackets. Torque the bolts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
       
      Sway bar control links and torque the nuts to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm)
       
      Cross member
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  

    2.3L Engine
    1998-00
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Splash shields
       
      Transverse member
       
      Power steering pressure and return hoses
       
      Intermediate shaft mounting bolt
       
      Engine mount member
       
      Engine mount through bolt
       
      Shock absorber and spring connecting bolt
       
      Sway bar links
       
      Sway bar brackets and bushings
       
      Sway bar
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Sway bar
       
      Sway bar bushings and brackets. Torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
       
      Sway bar control links and torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
       
      Shock absorber connecting bolt and torque to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm)
       
      Engine mount through bolt and torque to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
       
      Engine mount member and torque the bolts to 68 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
       
      Intermediate shaft bolt and torque to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
       
      Power steering pressure and return hoses. Torque the fasteners to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm)
       
      Transverse member and torque the bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm)
       
      Splash shields
       
      Negative battery cable
