    Removal & Installation



    1998-2004
    2wd
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      NOTE
      The rear brake drums must be removed so that there is no additional drag when measuring pinion bearing preload.



      Driveshaft
       
      Rear wheels
       
      Brake drums
       

    4.  
    5. Use an inch lb. torque wrench and measure the amount of torque required to maintain pinion rotation through several revolutions.
    6.  
    7. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Pinion flange
       
      Wheel speed sensor and rotor, if equipped
       
      Oil seal
       
      Pinion bearing
       
      Collapsible spacer
       

    8.  

    To install:


    NOTE
    Use a new collapsible spacer and wheel speed sensor rotor for assembly.

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Collapsible spacer
       
      Pinion bearing
       
      Pinion seal
       
      Pinion flange
       

    2.  
    3. Rotate the pinion flange occasionally while tightening the flange nut to make sure the pinion bearings seat correctly.
    4.  
    5. Take frequent bearing preload torque readings. Tighten the flange nut to achieve the preload torque readings originally recorded. Do not exceed 137-180 ft. lbs. (186-245 Nm) torque when tightening the pinion flange nut.
      CAUTION
      Never loosen the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload. If it is necessary to reduce bearing preload, install a new collapsible spacer.

    6.  
    7. Install or connect the following:

      Brake drums
       
      Rear wheels
       
      Driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm).
       

    8.  
    9. Fill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
    10.  

    4wd
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      NOTE

      Pinion seal
       
      Pinion flange

    3. Rotate the pinion flange occasionally while tightening the flange nut to make sure the pinion bearings seat correctly.
    4.  
    5. Take frequent bearing preload torque readings. Tighten the flange nut to achieve the preload torque readings originally recorded. Do not exceed 137-180 ft. lbs. (186-245 Nm) torque when tightening the pinion flange nut.
      CAUTION
      If the bearing preload can not be achieved at the specified torque, remove the pinion bearing and install a new adjustment spacer.

    6.  
    7. Install or connect the following:

      Brake drums
       
      Rear wheels
       
      Driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm).
       

    8.  
    9. Fill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
    10.  

    2005
    C200 Axle
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    4.  
    5. Remove the driveshaft.
    6.  
    7. Put a mating mark on the end of the drive pinion. The mating mark should be in line with the mating mark -A- on the companion flange.
    8.  
    9. Remove the drive pinion lock nut using tool KV38108300, or equivalent.
    10.  
    11. Using the proper tool, remove the companion flange. Using tool KV381054S0 (J-34286) or equivalent, remove the front oil seal.
    12.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  

    M 226 Axle
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
    4.  
    5. Remove the driveshaft.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake calipers and rotors.
    8.  
    9. Rotate the pinion three or four times using tool ST3127S00 (J-25765-A) or equivalent. Record the rotating torque.
    10.  
    11. Remove the drive pinion lock nut.
    12.  
    13. Put a mating mark on the end of the drive pinion. The mating mark should be in line with the mating mark -B- on the companion flange.
    14.  
    15. Remove the drive pinion lock nut using tool KV38108300, or equivalent.
    16.  
    17. Using the proper tool, remove the companion flange. Using tool KV381054S0 (J-34286) or equivalent, remove the front oil seal.
    18.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Measure the drive pinion bearing preload with the resistance tool. Specification should be equal to the measurement taken during the removal procedure plus an additional 5 inch lb. If the specification is low, tighten the new drive pinion lock nut in 5 ft. lb increments until the drive pinion preload is met.
      NOTE
      Never loosen the drive pinion nut to decrease drive pinion bearing preload. Do not exceed specified preload. If preload torque is exceeded a new collapsible spacer must be installed. If maximum torque is reached prior to reaching the required preload, the collapsible spacer may have been damaged. Replace the collapsible spacer.

    4.  
    5. Turn the drive pinion in both directions several times to set the bearing rollers.
    6.  
    7. Check the preload with tool ST3127S000 (J-25765-A) or equivalent. Total preload, with oil seal, for gear ratio 3.538 should be 22-40 inch lbs., for gear ratio 3.692 should be 21-39 inch lbs
    8.  
    9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
    10.
