    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
    2.2L Engine
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hood.
    6.  
    7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Drain the engine oil.
    10.  
    11. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
    12.  
    13. Remove the rear end stiffener plate.
    14.  
    15. Remove the oil dipstick and oil pan.
    16.  
    17. Remove the oil strainer and gasket.
    18.  
    19. Carefully suspend the engine with a sling device, or equivalent and remove the timing belt and pulleys.
    20.  
    21. If equipped, remove the crankshaft position sensor.
    22.  
    23. Remove the 12 mounting bolts, the oil pump, and the gasket.

    To install:

    1. Install a new gasket and the oil pump with the 12 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    2.  


    NOTE
    The long bolts are 1.38 in. (35mm) and all the others are 0.98 in. (25mm).

    1. Install the crankshaft position sensor, if removed.
    2.  
    3. Install the timing belt and pulleys, remove the engine sling device and safely lower the engine.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil strainer with a new gasket, then tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the oil pan and dipstick.
    8.  


    NOTE
    The pan must be installed within 5 minutes of sealant application or the procedure will have to be repeated.

    1. Install the rear end stiffener plate and tighten the 3 bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the front exhaust pipe.
    4.  
    5. Lower the vehicle and fill the engine with oil.
    6.  


    WARNING
    Be sure to prime the oil pump prior to initial engine start-up or engine damage may occur.

    1. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine, and check for leaks.
    2.  
    3. Recheck the engine oil level and install the hood.
    4.  

    3.0L (1MZ-FE) Engine
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
    4.  
    5. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the right front wheel.
    8.  
    9. Remove the fender apron seal.
    10.  
    11. Remove the engine undercover.
    12.  
    13. Drain the engine oil from the engine.
    14.  
    15. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
    16.  
    17. Remove the front exhaust pipe bracket from the No. 1 oil pan.
    18.  
    19. Remove the alternator drive belt from the engine.
    20.  
    21. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor from the engine.
    22.  
    23. Remove the power steering pump drive belt and adjusting strut.
    24.  
    25. Remove the timing belt and belt pulleys from the engine.
    26.  
    27. Remove the rear timing belt cover from the engine by removing the wire clamps and 6 bolts.
    28.  
    29. Remove the air conditioning compressor housing bracket by removing the 3 bolts.
    30.  
    31. Remove the No. 2 oil pan, oil strainer, No.1 oil pan and baffle plate.
    32.  
    33. Remove the crankshaft position sensor by removing the connector and bolt.
    34.  
    35. Remove the oil pump as follows:
    36.  
      1. Remove the 9 bolts. Make a note of the position of the each bolt. When replacing the bolts into the oil pump body, place each bolt in the position from which it was removed.
      2.  
      3. Remove the oil pump body by prying between the oil pump and main bearing cap.
      4.  
      5. Remove the O-ring from the cylinder block.
      6.  
      7. Remove the plug, gasket, spring, and relief valve from the oil pump body.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 9 screws, pump body cover, drive, and driven rotors.
      10.  


    To install:

    1. To install the oil pump:
    2.  
      1. Install the driven rotors, drive, pump body cover, then install the 9 screws.
      2.  
      3. Install the oil pump relief valve, spring, gasket, and the plug to the oil pump body.
      4.  
      5. Place a new O-ring on the cylinder block.
      6.  
      7. Using a non residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces to the oil pump.
      8.  
      9. Apply liquid sealant to the oil pump and engine block.
      10.  
      11. Install the oil pump to the engine block. Be sure to engage the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear with the large teeth of the crankshaft.
      12.  
      13. Install the 9 bolts to the oil pump and uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes. Tighten the bolts as follows:
      14.  
      15. 10mm head-69 inch lbs. (8 Nm)
      16.  
      17. 12mm head-14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
      18.  

    3. Install the crankshaft position sensor and install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the baffle plate to the No. oil pan and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 1 oil pan, oil strainer and No. 2 oil pan.
    8.  
    9. Install the air conditioning compressor housing bracket and 3 bolts. Tighten the 3 bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Install the rear timing belt cover with the 6 bolts and 3 wire clamps. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Install the timing belt pulleys.
    14.  
    15. Install the timing belt.
    16.  
    17. Install the adjusting strut and power steering drive belt as follows:

      1. Temporarily install the adjusting strut with the bolt and nut.
      2.  
      3. Install the drive belt, then install the pivot and adjusting bolts. Tighten the bolt and nut to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
      4.  

    19. Install the air conditioning compressor.
    20.  
    21. Install the alternator drive belt.
    22.  
    23. Install the front exhaust pipe bracket to the No. 1 oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    24.  
    25. Install the front exhaust pipe.
    26.  
    27. Install the engine undercover.
    28.  
    29. Install the right fender apron seal.
    30.  
    31. Install the right front wheel and lower the vehicle.
    32.  
    33. Fill the engine with oil.
    34.  
    35. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
    36.  
    37. Start the engine and check for leaks.
    38.  
    39. Recheck the engine oil.
