    Igniter (Ignition Module)

    External

    Only the 4A-GE engines have an external igniter.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Separate the wiring harness connections.
    4.  
    5. Unbolt the igniter.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the nut holding the wire lead onto the coil.
    8.  
    9. Tag and disconnect the wire lead.
    10.  
    11. Lift the igniter off its mount.
    12.  

    To install:
    1. Mount the igniter to the bracket.
    2.  
    3. Attach the wire lead to the coil.
    4.  
    5. Connect the harness.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

    Internal

    See Figures 1 and 2

    The igniter is not applicable to all Corolla models. All 4A-F engines have an ignitor inside the distributor assembly. The 4A-FE engines also have an internal igniter from 1988-1995 as do the 7A-FE engines from 1993 to 1994.

    Review the complete service procedure before this repair. Note position, color of wire and routing of all internal distributor assembly wiring.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the distributor as outlined.
    4.  
    5. Remove the distributor rotor.
    6.  
    7. Remove the dust cover over the distributor components and remove the dust cover over the ignition coil.
    8.  
    9. Remove the nuts and disconnect the wiring from the ignition coil.
    10.  
    11. Remove the screws retaining the ignition coil and gasket from the distributor.
    12.  
    13. At the igniter terminals, disconnect the wiring from the attaching points.
    14.  
    15. Loosen and remove the two screws holding the igniter, then pull it from the distributor.

    To install:
    1. Install and secure the igniter, connect its wiring. Pay particular attention to the correct routing of the wiring within the housing. There is one correct position only; any other wiring placements risk damage.

    1. Install the ignition coil, gasket, screws and secure its wiring. Again, watch the wiring positions.

    3. Install a new gasket to the housing when attaching the dust cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the distributor rotor.
    6.  
    7. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke. Turn the crankshaft clockwise, and position the slit of the intake camshaft as shown.
    8.  
    9. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the new O-ring and install it to the distributor housing. align the cutout portion of the coupling with the protrusion of the housing. Insert the distributor, aligning the center of the flange with that of the bolt hole on the cylinder head. Lightly tighten the 2 mounting bolts.

    11. Attach the spark plug wires to the distributor cap.
    12.  
    13. Connect the wiring to the distributor. Connect the negative battery cable.

    15. Warm up the engine to reach operating temperature and adjust the timing.
    16.  
    17. Reset any digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.
