    Lower Ball Joints

    Removal & Installation



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Wheel
       
      Hub nut
       
      Caliper and rotor
       
      Lower control arm from the ball joint
       
      Tie rod end
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Ball joint from the knuckle
       

    4.  
    5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

      Ball stud nut: 90 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
       
      Lower arm-to-ball joint: 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm)
       
      Tie rod end: 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm)

    6.  

    Hybrid
    1. Remove the wheel.
    2.  
    3. Remove the axle hub nut.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the speed sensor.
    6.  
    7. Remove the caliper and suspend it out of the way.
    8.  
    9. Remove the rotor.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the tie rod end.
    12.  
    13. Remove the lower arm.
    14.  
    15. Remove the disc brake dust cover.
    16.  
    17. Pull the knuckle from the halfshaft.
    18.  
    19. Secure the knuckle in a vise.
    20.  
    21. Remove the cotter pin and nut.
    22.  
    23. Using Special Tool 09628-62011 or suitable ball joint puller, remove the lower ball joint.

    25. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

      Ball joint-to-arm: 94 ft. lbs. (127 Nm)
       
      Ball joint-to-knuckle: 91 ft. lbs. (123 Nm)
       
      Hub nut: 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm)
