    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  


    CAUTION
    After the negative battery cable has been disconnected, wait at least 1 1 / 2 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its energy.

    1. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    4.  
    5. Remove the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
      2.  
      3. At both sides of the steering wheel, remove the side covers.
      4.  
      5. Using a Torx® wrench, loosen the steering wheel Torx® screws until the screw-s circumference ring catches on the screw case.
      6.  
      7. Carefully, lift the air bag module, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the air bag.
      8.

    CAUTION
    Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

    1. Remove the steering wheel nut.
    2.  
    3. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    4.  

    1. Remove the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
      1. Disconnect the seat belt pre-tensioner connector.
      2.  
      3. Remove both front door scuff plates.
      4.  
      5. At both sides, remove the 2 cowl side trim board clips and the trim boards.
      6.  
      7. Remove the combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination switch.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 steering column cover screws and the cover.
      10.  
      11. Remove the cluster finish panel screw and the panel.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 4 combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and the meter.
      14.  
      15. Remove the hood lock release lever.
      16.  
      17. Remove the 2 lower finish panel screws and the panel.
      18.  
      19. For USA models, remove the lower panel insert.
      20.  
      21. Remove the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
      22.  
      23. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and the lower steering column bolt; then carefully, remove the steering column.
      24.  
      25. Remove the 2 center cluster finish panel screws and the panel.
      26.  
      27. Pull off the heater control knobs.
      28.

    NOTE
    For Canada models, remove the 2 screws.

    1. Pry off the heater control name plate and the cluster instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 heater control assembly screws and the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors and remove the cluster instrument panel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the heater control and accessory assembly.
    8.  
    9. Remove the radio.
    10.  
    11. Remove the side trim cover and the console box.
    12.  
    13. Remove the lower center cluster finish panel and disconnect the connectors.
    14.  
    15. Remove the stereo opening cover.
    16.  
    17. Remove the glove compartment door.
    18.  
    19. Remove the instrument panel-to-chassis fasteners.
    20.  
    21. Remove the instrument panel and disconnect the electrical connectors.
    22.  
    23. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 brace nuts/bolts and the braces.
    24.  
    25. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement-to-chassis nuts/bolts and the reinforcement.
    26.  

    1. Remove the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator core. Discard the O-rings and plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 3 evaporator housing-to-chassis nuts/bolts and the housing.
      8.  

    2.  
    3. Remove the rear heater duct from the heater housing.
    4.  
    5. Remove the heater housing-to-chassis nuts and the housing.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 defroster nozzle-to-heater housing screws and the nozzle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 heater core-to-heater housing screws, clamps and the heater core.

    To install:

    1. Install the heater core and the 2 heater core-to-heater housing screws and clamps.
    2.  
    3. Install the defroster nozzle and the 2 nozzle-to-heater housing screws.
    4.  
    5. Install the heater housing and the housing-to-chassis nuts.
    6.  
    7. Install the rear heater duct to the heater housing.
    8.  
    9. Install the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the evaporator housing and the 3 housing-to-chassis nuts/bolts.
      2.  
      3. Connect the electrical connectors.
      4.  
      5. Using new O-rings, connect the refrigerant lines to the evaporator core.
      6.  

    10.  
    11. Install the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement and the reinforcement-to-chassis nuts/bolts.
      2.  
      3. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 brace and the braces nuts/bolts.
      4.  
      5. Install the instrument panel and connect the electrical connectors.
      6.  
      7. Install the instrument panel-to-chassis fasteners.
      8.  
      9. Install the glove compartment door.
      10.  
      11. Install the stereo opening cover.
      12.  
      13. Install the lower center cluster finish panel and connect the connectors.
      14.  
      15. Install the side trim cover and the console box.
      16.  
      17. Install the radio.
      18.  
      19. Install the heater control and accessory assembly.
      20.  
      21. Connect the connectors and install the cluster instrument panel.
      22.  
      23. Install the heater control assembly and the 3 assembly screws.
      24.  
      25. Install the cluster instrument panel and the heater control name plate.
      26.

    NOTE
    For Canada models, install the 2 screws.

    1. Push on the heater control knobs.
    2.  
    3. Install the center cluster finish panel and the 2 panel screws.
    4.  
    5. Carefully, install the steering column. Then, install the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and torque the nuts/bolts 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the lower steering column bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (5 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 2 heater-to-register duct.
    8.  
    9. For USA models, install the lower panel insert.
    10.  
    11. Install the lower finish panel and the 2 panel screws.
    12.  
    13. Install the hood lock release lever.
    14.  
    15. Install the combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and the 4 meter screws.
    16.  
    17. Install the cluster finish panel and the panel screw.
    18.  
    19. Install the steering column cover and the 4 cover screws.
    20.  
    21. Install the combination switch, connect the electrical connectors and install the combination switch-to-steering column screws.
    22.  
    23. At both sides, install the cowl side trim board and the 2 trim boards clips.
    24.  
    25. Install both front door scuff plates.
    26.  
    27. Connect the seat belt pre-tensioner connector.
    28.  

    1. Install the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
      2.  
      3. Install the steering wheel nut and torque the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
      4.  
      5. Connect the electrical connector and carefully, install the air bag module.
      6.  
      7. Using a Torx® wrench, tighten the steering wheel screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
      8.  
      9. At both sides of the steering wheel, install the side covers.
      10.  

    2.  
    3. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
    4.  
    5. Refill the cooling system.
    6.  
    7. Connect the negative battery cable.
    8.  
    9. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system.
    10.  
    11. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures. Check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    12.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the three bolts, three nuts and then remove the number one and number two braces.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake pedal spring. Remove the five bolts, nut and the reinforcement bar assembly.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the blower resistor, blower motor connectors and harness clamps at the blower unit.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the air inlet servomotor connector.
    12.  
    13. Remove the two screws, two nuts and the blower unit.
    14.  
    15. Remove the rear duct at the air conditioning unit, if equipped.
    16.  
    17. Remove the drain hose. Remove the two nuts and the air conditioning unit.
    18.  
    19. Remove the thermistor. Remove the evaporator. Remove the expansion valve. Remove the heater core.
    20.  
    21. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    22.  

    4Runner



    Removal & Installation
    Front Heater
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
      CAUTION
      After the negative battery cable has been disconnected, wait at least 1 1 / 2 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its energy.

    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    6.  
    7. Remove the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
      2.  
      3. At both sides of the steering wheel, remove the side covers.
      4.  
      5. Using a Torx® wrench, loosen the steering wheel screws until the screw-s circumference ring catches on the screw case.
      6.  
      7. Carefully, lift the air bag module, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the air bag.
        CAUTION
        Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

      8.  
      9. Remove the steering wheel nut.
      10.  
      11. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
      12.

    9. Remove the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove both front door scuff plates.
      2.  
      3. Remove both cowl side trims.
      4.  
      5. Remove the 2 hood lock release lever screws and the hood lock release lever.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 2 fuel lid release lever screws and the fuel lid release lever.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 lower finish panel bolts and the panel.
      10.  
      11. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 heater-to-register duct screw and the ducts.
      12.  
      13. Pry out the starter switch bezel.
      14.  
      15. Remove the steering column cover screws and the covers.
      16.  
      17. Remove the combination switch-to-steering column screws, disconnect the electrical connector and the combination switch.
      18.  
      19. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts/bolts and the lower steering column bolt; then carefully, remove the steering column.
      20.  
      21. Remove the 4 cluster finish panel screws and the panel.
      22.  
      23. Remove the 4 combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter.
      24.  
      25. Pry out the parking brake hole cover.
      26.  
      27. Pry out the upper console panel.
      28.  
      29. Disengage the 7 center cluster finish panel clips and remove the panel.
        NOTE
        Remove the center cluster finish panel clips by starting at the bottom and working toward the top.

      30.  
      31. Remove the heater control knobs.
      32.  
      33. Remove the 2 rear console box bolts/screws and the rear console box.
      34.  
      35. Remove the upper console panel garnish.
      36.  
      37. Remove the 2 glove compartment door screws and the door.
      38.  
      39. Disconnect the passenger-s side air bag module electrical connector.
      40.  
      41. Remove the glove box light.
      42.  
      43. Remove the 3 lower No. 2 finish panel bolts and the panel.
      44.  
      45. Remove the 3 glove compartment door reinforcement bolts and the reinforcement.
      46.  
      47. Remove the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.
      48.  
      49. Remove the radio assembly.
      50.  
      51. Remove the side bracket bolt and the bracket.
      52.  
      53. If equipped with manual air conditioning, remove the heater control assembly.
      54.  
      55. If equipped with automatic air conditioning, remove the air conditioning control assembly.
      56.  
      57. Remove the instrument panel-to-chassis nut and 2 bolts; then, remove the instrument panel.
      58.  
      59. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement-to-chassis nuts/bolts and the reinforcement.
      60.  

    10.  
    11. Remove the defroster nozzle and heater-to-register duct.
    12.  
    13. Remove the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator core. Discard the O-rings and plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 3 evaporator housing-to-chassis screws and the housing.
      8.  

    14.  
    15. Disconnect the mode control servomotor connector.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the aspirator hose from the room temperature sensor.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the heater valve control cable.
    20.  
    21. Remove the heater housing-to-chassis nuts and the heater housing.
    22.  
    23. Remove the 3 heater core-to-heater housing screws, the 2 clips and clamp.
    24.  
    25. Remove the heater core from the heater housing.

    1. Install the 3 heater core-to-heater housing screws, the 2 clips and clamp.
    2.  
    3. Install the heater housing and the heater housing-to-chassis nuts.
    4.  
    5. Connect the heater valve control cable.
    6.  
    7. Connect the aspirator hose to the room temperature sensor.
    8.  
    9. Connect the mode control servomotor connector.
    10.  
    11. Install the defroster nozzle and heater-to-register duct.
    12.  
    13. Install the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the evaporator housing and the 3 housing-to-chassis screws.
      2.  
      3. Connect the electrical connectors.
      4.  
      5. Using new O-rings, connect the refrigerant lines to the evaporator core.
      6.  

    14.  
    15. Install the instrument panel and reinforcement by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement and the reinforcement-to-chassis nuts/bolts.
      2.  
      3. Install the instrument panel and the instrument panel-to-chassis nut and 2 bolts.
      4.  
      5. If equipped with automatic air conditioning, install the air conditioning control assembly.
      6.  
      7. If equipped with manual air conditioning, install the heater control assembly.
      8.  
      9. Install the side bracket and the bracket bolt.
      10.  
      11. Install the radio assembly.
      12.  
      13. Install the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.
      14.  
      15. Install the glove compartment door reinforcement and the 3 reinforcement bolts.
      16.  
      17. Install the lower No. 2 finish panel and the 3 panel bolts.
      18.  
      19. Install the glove box light.
      20.  
      21. Connect the passenger-s side air bag module electrical connector.
      22.  
      23. Install the glove compartment door and the 2 door screws.
      24.  
      25. Install the upper console panel garnish.
      26.  
      27. Install the rear console box and the 2 rear console box bolts/screws.
      28.  
      29. Install the heater control knobs.
      30.  
      31. Install the center cluster finish panel and engage the 7 panel clips.
      32.  
      33. Install the upper console panel.
      34.  
      35. Install the parking brake hole cover.
      36.  
      37. Install the combination meter, connect the electrical connectors and install the 4 combination meter screws.
      38.  
      39. Install the cluster finish panel and the 4 panel screws.
      40.  
      41. Install the steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the lower steering column bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
      42.  
      43. Install the combination switch-to-steering column, connect the electrical connector and the combination switch screws.
      44.  
      45. Install the steering column cover and the cover screws.
      46.  
      47. Pry out the starter switch bezel.
      48.  
      49. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 heater-to-register duct and the duct screws.
      50.  
      51. Install the lower finish panel and the 4 panel bolts.
      52.  
      53. Install the fuel lid release lever and the 2 fuel lid release lever screws.
      54.  
      55. Install the hood lock release lever and the 2 hood lock release lever screws.
      56.  
      57. Install both cowl side trims.
      58.  
      59. Install both front door scuff plates.
      60.  

    16.  
    17. Install the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
      2.  
      3. Install the steering wheel nut and torque the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
      4.  
      5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
      6.  
      7. Using a Torx® wrench, torque the steering wheel screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
      8.  
      9. At both sides of the steering wheel, install the side covers.
      10.

    19. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.

      23. Remove the 4 combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the combination meter.

      25. Pry out the parking brake hole cover.

      27. Pry out the upper console panel.

      29. Disengage the 7 center cluster finish panel clips and remove the panel.
        NOTE

      49. Remove the radio assembly.

      51. Remove the side bracket bolt and the bracket.

      53. If equipped with manual air conditioning, remove the heater control assembly.
      54.  
      55. If equipped with automatic air conditioning, remove the air conditioning control assembly.
      56.  
      57. Remove the instrument panel-to-chassis nut and 2 bolts; then, remove the instrument panel.
      58.  
      59. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement-to-chassis nuts/bolts and the reinforcement.

    11. Remove the defroster nozzle and heater-to-register duct.

    13. Remove the evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:

    5. Connect the heater valve control cable.

      7. If equipped with manual air conditioning, install the heater control assembly.
      8.  
      9. Install the side bracket and the bracket bolt.
      10.  
      11. Install the radio assembly.
      12.  
      13. Install the No. 4 heater-to-register duct.
      14.  
      15. Install the glove compartment door reinforcement and the 3 reinforcement bolts.
      16.  
      17. Install the lower No. 2 finish panel and the 3 panel bolts.
      18.  
      19. Install the glove box light.

      21. Connect the passenger-s side air bag module electrical connector.

      41. Install the steering column and torque the steering column-to-instrument panel nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the lower steering column bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

      43. Install the combination switch-to-steering column, connect the electrical connector and the combination switch screws.

      45. Install the steering column cover and the cover screws.
      46.  
      47. Pry out the starter switch bezel.
      48.  
      49. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 heater-to-register duct and the duct screws.
      50.  
      51. Install the lower finish panel and the 4 panel bolts.
      52.  
      53. Install the fuel lid release lever and the 2 fuel lid release lever screws.
      54.  
      55. Install the hood lock release lever and the 2 hood lock release lever screws.
      56.  
      57. Install both cowl side trims.
      58.  
      59. Install both front door scuff plates.

    17. Install the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
      2.  
      3. Install the steering wheel nut and torque the nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
      4.  
      5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
      6.  
      7. Using a Torx® wrench, torque the steering wheel screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
      8.  
      9. At both sides of the steering wheel, install the side covers.
      10.

    19. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
    20.  
    21. Refill the cooling system.
    22.  
    23. Connect the negative battery cable.
    24.  
    25. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system.
    26.  
    27. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

    Rear Auxiliary Heater
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Remove the front seats.
    6.  
    7. Remove the center console box.
    8.  
    9. Move the floor carpet backward.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the rear heater hoses from the rear heater core.
    12.  
    13. Remove the rear heater duct bolt, screw and duct.
    14.  
    15. Remove the rear heater control assembly.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    18.  
    19. Remove the 3 rear heater housing-to-chassis screws and the housing.
    20.  
    21. Remove the blower resistor, the rear heater relay and with wiring harness from the rear heater housing.
    22.  
    23. Remove the rear heater housing case screws and separate the cases.
    24.  
    25. Remove the rear heater core.

    To install:

    1. Install the rear heater core.

    3. Assemble the rear heater housing case and install the case screws.
    4.  
    5. Install the blower resistor, the rear heater relay and wiring harness to the rear heater housing.

    7. Install the rear heater housing and the 3 housing-to-chassis screws.
    8.  
    9. Connect the electrical connectors.
    10.  
    11. Install the rear heater control assembly.
    12.  
    13. Install the rear heater duct, bolt and screw.
    14.  
    15. Connect the rear heater hoses to the rear heater core.
    16.  
    17. Move the floor carpet foreword.
    18.  
    19. Install the center console box.
    20.  
    21. Install the front seats.
    22.  
    23. Refill the cooling system.
    24.  
    25. Connect the negative battery cable.

    27. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
