    Adjustment



    The bearings on the 4WD are not adjustable.

    2-Wheel Drive
    1. Tighten the adjusting nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Turn the disc/hub assembly 2-3 times, from the left to the right.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the adjusting nut until it can be turned by hand.
    6.  
    7. Attach a spring tension gauge to 1 lug on the hub assembly. Pull on the gauge and measure the frictional force. Frictional force should be 1-3 lbs. (5.0-14.0 N).
    8.  
    9. Adjust the preload by tightening the nut.
    10.  
    11. Measure the hub axial play. The limit is 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).
    12.  

    1. Tighten the adjusting nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Brake caliper support bracket, by removing the 2 bolts. Support the brake caliper with a piece of wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.
       
      Cotter pin, lockcap, nut and the claw washer from the axle hub and disc
       
      Axle hub with the disc from the steering knuckle.
       

    4.  


    WARNING
    Do not drop the outer bearing when removing the hub.



    Inner oil seal
     
    Inner bearing
     
    Bearing outer races, using SST 09527-17011, a brass bar and a hammer
     

    1. If it is necessary to separate the hub and rotor, place matchmarks on the hub and rotor.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 5 bolts and remove the hub from the rotor.
    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      New bearing races, using SST 09527-17011 and a press.
       
      Hub to the rotor. Tighten the 5 bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
       

    2.  
    3. Clean all parts.
    4.  
    5. Repack the bearings with multi purpose grease and apply the same grease to the outer bearings.
    6.  
    7. Install or connect the following:

      Inner bearing and seal to the hub. Coat the inner seal with multi purpose grease.
       
      Outer bearing to the hub
       
      Hub to the steering knuckle
       
      Axle hub to the steering knuckle claw washer and nut
       

    8.  
    9. Adjust the bearing preload as described above.
    10.  
    11. Install or connect the following:

      Locknut, cotter pin and the grease cap
       
      Disc brake caliper. Tighten the 2 bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:
      WARNING
      Do not drop the outer bearing when removing the hub.

    1. Install or connect the following:

    9. Adjust the bearing preload as described above.

      Disc brake caliper. Tighten the 2 bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the brake fluid.
    4.  
    5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the speed sensor connector. Remove the two bolts and separate the skid control sensor wire.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolt and separate the front flexible hose.
    10.  
    11. Remove the front brake caliper. Remove the rotor.
    12.  
    13. Remove the cotter pin and nut. Using the proper tool separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
    14.  
    15. Remove the two bolts and separate the front lower ball joint attachment from the front axle.
    16.  
    17. Remove the clip and nut. Using the proper tool, separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
    18.  
    19. Remove the front axle hub from the vehicle.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Be sure to fill the master cylinder with the proper grade and type brake fluid.
    4.  
    5. Bleed the brakes, as required.
    6.  
    7. Be sure to check and adjust the alignment, as required.
    8.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front wheel.
    4.  
    5. Detach the shock absorber.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the driveshaft by removing the grease cap and pulling out the cotter pin and lock cap.
    8.  
    9. Apply the brakes to hold the axle from spinning and remove the lock nut.
    10.  
    11. If the vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes, detach the speed sensor and wiring harness clamp from the steering knuckle.
    12.  
    13. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Banjo bolt and 2 gaskets from the caliper
       
      Flexible brake hose from the caliper
       
      Brake caliper and then the rotor
       
      Lower ball joint
       
      Steering knuckle
       

    14.  
    15. Clamp the axle hub in a soft jaw vise.
    16.  


    NOTE
    Close the vise until it holds the hub bolts.

    1. Using the proper seal puller or prytool, remove the oil seal.
    2.  
    3. On vehicles equipped with a free wheel hub and on the Pre Runner, use a chisel and hammer to loosen the staked part of the lock nut.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lock nut. A special service tool may be required.
    6.  
    7. Remove the Antilock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor rotor/spacer.
    8.  


    NOTE
    Do not scratch the speed sensor rotor.

    1. Detach the bolts to the dust shield and shift the shield towards the outside of the hub.
    2.  
    3. Remove the axle from the steering knuckle, a special service tool may be required.
    4.  
    5. Remove the dust cover from the steering knuckle.
    6.  
    7. On vehicles without a free wheeling hub, that are 4WD only, remove the bearing spacer and ABS speed sensor rotor spacer.
    8.  
    9. Remove the outside seal by prying it out with a seal puller.
    10.  
    11. Remove the bearing from the steering knuckle by removing the snapring with a pair of snapring pliers.
    12.  
    13. Press the bearing from the steering knuckle.
    14.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      New bearing
       
      New oil seal
       
      Axle hub to the steering knuckle. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
       
      ABS speed sensor rotor
       

    2.  
    3. On vehicles that are equipped with a free wheel hub, install the bearing spacer.
    4.  
    5. Except Pre-Runner install a new inside oil seal.
    6.  
    7. On the Pre-Runner, install the grease cap.
    8.  
    9. The remainder of the installation procedure is the reverse of removal. New lock nut torque is 203 ft. lbs. (274 Nm) for the PreRunner; 174 ft. lbs. (235 Nm) for all others.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front wheel.
    4.  
    5. Detach the shock absorber.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the driveshaft by removing the grease cap and pulling out the cotter pin and lock cap.
    8.  
    9. Apply the brakes to hold the axle from spinning and remove the lock nut.
    10.  
    11. If the vehicle is equipped with antilock brakes, detach the speed sensor and wiring harness clamp from the steering knuckle.

    13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    37. Press the bearing from the steering knuckle.

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      New bearing
       
      New oil seal
       
      Axle hub to the steering knuckle. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
       
      ABS speed sensor rotor
       

    2.  
    3. On vehicles that are equipped with a free wheel hub, install the bearing spacer.
    4.  
    5. Except Pre-Runner install a new inside oil seal.
    6.  
    7. On the Pre-Runner, install the grease cap.
    8.  
    9. The remainder of the installation procedure is the reverse of removal. New lock nut torque is 203 ft. lbs. (274 Nm) for the PreRunner; 174 ft. lbs. (235 Nm) for all others.

    4wd And Prerunner

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the brake fluid.
    4.  
    5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolt and separate the speed sensor. Disengage the clamps. Remove the bolt and separate the speed sensor wire harness from the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the front brake caliper. Remove the rotor.
    10.  
    11. Remove the axle hub grease cap. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap. Remove the front axle hub nut.
    12.  
    13. Remove the nut and separate the stabilizer link from the steering knuckle.
    14.  
    15. Remove the cotter pin and nut. Using the proper tool separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
    16.  
    17. Remove the two bolts and separate the front suspension lower arm from the front axle.
    18.  
    19. Properly support the front suspension lower arm with a jack. Remove the clip and nut.
    20.  
    21. Using the proper tool separate the steering knuckle from the front suspension upper control arm.
    22.  
    23. On 4WD, use a plastic hammer and separate the front axle hub from the front driveshaft.
    24.  
    25. Remove the front axle hub from the vehicle.
    26.  

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
    2.  
    3. Be sure to fill the master cylinder with the proper grade and type brake fluid.
    4.  
    5. Bleed the brakes, as required.
    6.  
    7. Be sure to check and adjust the alignment, as required.
