    C70, S70 And V70



    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Using tools No. 155 8957, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core by pressing in the hose connections, squeezing the locking catches and pulling out the hoses. Discard the O-rings.
    6.  
    7. At the driver-s side, remove the soundproofing panel-to-dashboard Torx 20 screw and the soundproofing panel.
    8.  
    9. Open the glove box door; then, remove the 4 glove compartment-to-dashboard Torx 20 screws and the glove compartment.
    10.  
    11. At the passenger-s side, remove the 2 soundproofing panel-to-dashboard screws and the soundproofing panel.
    12.  
    13. At both the driver-s side and passenger-s side, remove the carpet supports.
    14.  
    15. If equipped, remove the Road Traffic Information (RTI) control module bracket or booster bracket.
    16.  
    17. If equipped, remove the knee bolster.
    18.  
    19. Disconnect the drain hose and fold it out of the way.
    20.  
    21. At both sides of the heater/air conditioning housing assembly, remove the heater core cover screws.
    22.  
    23. Remove the heater housing pipe flange screw.
    24.  
    25. Carefully, remove the heater core with the heater core cover.
    26.  
    27. Remove the heater core from the cover.

    To install:

    1. Install the heater core to the cover.
    2.  
    3. Carefully, install the heater core with the heater core cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the heater housing pipe flange screw.
    6.  
    7. At both sides of the heater/air conditioning housing assembly, install the heater core cover screws.
    8.  
    9. Connect the drain hose.
    10.  
    11. If equipped, install the knee bolster.
    12.  
    13. If equipped, install the Road Traffic Information (RTI) control module bracket or booster bracket.
    14.  
    15. At both the driver-s side and passenger-s side, install the carpet supports.
    16.  
    17. At the passenger-s side, install the soundproofing panel and the 2 soundproofing panel-to-dashboard screws.
    18.  
    19. Install the glove compartment and the 4 glove compartment-to-dashboard Torx 20 screws.
    20.  
    21. At the driver-s side, install the soundproofing panel and the soundproofing panel-to-dashboard Torx 20 screw.
    22.  
    23. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core by inserting the hoses, squeezing the locking catches and pressing in the hose connections.
    24.  
    25. Refill the cooling system.
    26.  
    27. Connect the negative battery cable.
    28.  
    29. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    30.  

    Removal And Installation
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Using tools No. 155 8957, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core by pressing in the hose connections, squeezing the locking catches and pulling out the hoses. Discard the O-rings.
    6.  
    7. At the driver-s side, remove the soundproofing panel-to-dashboard Torx 20 screw and the soundproofing panel.
    8.  
    9. Open the glove box door; then, remove the 4 glove compartment-to-dashboard Torx 20 screws and the glove compartment.

    11. At the passenger-s side, remove the 2 soundproofing panel-to-dashboard screws and the soundproofing panel.
    12.  
    13. At both the driver-s side and passenger-s side, remove the carpet supports.

    15. If equipped, remove the Road Traffic Information (RTI) control module bracket or booster bracket.

    To install:

    1. Install the heater core to the cover.
    2.  
    3. Carefully, install the heater core with the heater core cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the heater housing pipe flange screw.
    6.  
    7. At both sides of the heater/air conditioning housing assembly, install the heater core cover screws.
    8.  
    9. Connect the drain hose.
    10.  
    11. If equipped, install the knee bolster.

    29. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

    1. Remove the heater hoses in the engine compartment.
    2.  
    3. Remove the seal and the plate.
    4.  
    5. Remove the soundproofing panel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the stop lamp switch.
    8.  
    9. Remove the tie strap for the pipes
    10.  
    11. Remove the screws for the heat exchanger
    12.  
    13. Remove the mounting brackets for the pipes.
    14.  
    15. Position plenty of paper under the heat exchanger and around the pipes
    16.  
    17. Drain the coolant into a suitable container.
    18.  
    19. Detach the pipes and position them out of the way
    20.  
    21. Pull out the heat exchanger.

    To install:


    NOTE
    Always use new O-rings

    1. Install the heat exchanger carefully
    2.  
    3. Screw the heat exchanger into place
    4.  
    5. Install the upper pipes
    6.  
    7. Install the locking plate using round-nosed pliers
    8.  
    9. Press in the pipes using a screwdriver. Press the catch using pliers
    10.  
    11. Install the lower pipes
    12.  
    13. Install the locking plate using round-nosed pliers
    14.  
    15. Press in the pipe using a screwdriver. Press in the locking bracket using round-nosed pliers
    16.  
    17. Install the tie strap for the pipes
    18.  
    19. Install the seal and the plate
    20.  
    21. Install the heating hoses in the engine compartment
    22.  
    23. Start the engine and the heating system
    24.  
    25. Fill the cooling system with coolant
    26.  
    27. Check that the pipe connectors do not leak
    28.  
    29. Install the soundproofing panel.
    30.  

    S40, V40



    1. In the engine compartment:
      1. Remove the top splashguard.
      2.  
      3. Install two hose clips on the hoses to the heat exchanger. Remove the hoses.
      4.  
      5. Remove the air conditioning pipe in the engine compartment from the support.
      6.  

    2.  
    3. In the passenger compartment:
      1. Disconnect the wiring and the connectors located on the center support.
      2.  
      3. Remove the mounting bolts from the center support. Remove the support.
      4.  
      5. Remove the control panel.
      6.  
      7. Disconnect all the connectors.
      8.  
      9. Remove the power unit
      10.  

    4.  
    5. Cars with air conditioning remove the air conditioning pipe in the engine compartment from the support.
    6.  
    7. Remove the bolts and the nut from the power unit. Pull the power unit backwards as far as possible
    8.  
    9. Remove the upper section from the housing.
    10.  
    11. Remove the section that connects with the floor heater.
    12.  
    13. Press the pipes down. Remove the lower section.
    14.  
    15. Remove the four mounting bolts.
    16.  
    17. Pull off the housing. Press the floor heater down. Remove the housing.
    18.  
    19. Remove the control lever on the valve side.
    20.  
    21. Remove the mounting and the clips around it.
    22.  
    23. Carefully separate the components.
    24.  
    25. Replace damaged components if necessary.

    NOTE
    Do not disassemble damper motors when adjusting.

    1. Replace the refrigerant temperature sensor.
    2.  
    3. Replace the heat exchanger.
    4.  
    5. Check the seals (also on the dampers).
    6.  
    7. Install the control mechanism last.
    8.  
    9. Install in reverse order.
    10.  
    11. Check the setting of the damper motors.
    12.  

    960 Series



    Removal And Installation
    With Electronic Climate Control (ECC)

    NOTE
    On some vehicles equipped with Automatic Climate Control, a thermal switch is located on the outlet hose from the heater core. It switches ON and starts the fan motor only when the water temperature exceeds approximately 95°F (35°C). This prevents cold air from being blown into the passenger compartment during winter. The thermal switch is bypassed in the defrost position.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the heater core cover plate.
    8.  
    9. Remove the dashboard by performing the following procedures:
      NOTE
      Before performing the next procedure, be sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.



      From the right side, remove the lower glove box panel, the glove box, the footwell panel and the -A- post panel. Disconnect the solar sensor electrical connector and cut the cable ties.
       
      From the left side, remove the lower steering wheel sound-proofing, the knee bolster (leave the bracket attached to the bolster), the footwell panel and the -A- post panel.
       
      From the left side, remove the defroster grille, the plastic fuse box screws, the ashtray, the dashboard-to-center console screws, the parking brake-to-console screws (move the console rearward) and the lower center console screws (located below the ashtray).
       

    10.  
    11. If equipped with an SRS, remove:

      steering column adjuster (Allen)
       
      steering column covers
       
      air bag assembly (Torx)
       
      steering wheel center bolt
       
      plastic tape label screw from the steering wheel hub (use the lockscrew, label attached, to lock the contact reel through the steering wheel hub hole)
       
      steering wheel
       

    12.  
    13. Remove the contact reel and the steering column combination switch assembly.
      NOTE
      After securing the contact reel, do not turn the steering wheel for it will shear off the contact reel pin.

    14.  
    15. From the left side of the steering column, push out the light switch panel. Remove the small trim moldings and the light switch.
    16.  
    17. From the right side of the steering column, push out the switch panel. Remove the ECC control panel, the radio console and the small trim molding.
    18.  
    19. Remove the outer air vent grille by lifting it upwards, grasp it at the bottom and pull it upwards to release it. Remove the instrument panel cover-to-dash screws and the cover.
    20.  
    21. Remove the combined instrument assembly-to-dash screws and the assembly; disconnect any electrical connectors and/or the vacuum hoses.
    22.  
    23. From the rear of the dashboard, cut the cable ties.
    24.  
    25. At the dashboard-to-firewall area, turn the retaining clip 1 / 3 turn (to release), pull the dash out slightly and pass the fuse box through the opening. Disconnect the cable harnesses from the dashboard and carefully lift it from the vehicle.
    26.  
    27. From the left side of the heater housing, remove the lower duct. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the diaphragms and the electrical connector. Remove the heater core cover-to-housing screws and the cover.
    28.  
    29. Remove the heater core-to-housing bracket and carefully remove the heater core.
    30.  

    To install:

    1. Clean the heater housing of al dirt and debris before installation. Install the heater core and the bracket.
    2.  
    3. Install the heater core cover to the housing. Connect the electrical connector and the vacuum hoses. Install the lower duct to the housing assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install the dashboard by performing the following procedures:

      Install the dashboard, connect the cable harnesses, pass the fuse box through the opening. Secure the dash clips by turning them 1 / 3 turn.
       
      Install the small trim molding, the radio console, the ECC control panel and the right side switch panel.
       
      At the left side of the steering column, install the light switch, the small trim moldings and the light switch panel.
       
      If equipped with an SRS, install the steering column combination switch assembly and the contact reel. Install the steering wheel and remove the lockscrew. Install the steering wheel center bolt, the air bag assembly and the steering column adjuster.
       
      If not equipped with an SRS, install the steering column combination switch assembly, the steering column covers, the steering wheel adjustment assembly and the steering wheel.
       
      At the left side, install the lower center console screw, the parking brake-to-console screws, the dashboard-to-center console screws, the ashtray, the plastic fuse box screws and the defroster grille.
       
      At the left side, install the -A- post panel, the footwell panel, the knee bolster (with bracket) and the lower steering wheel sound-proofing.
       
      At the right side, connect the solar sensor electrical connector, install the -A- post panel, the footwell panel, the glove box and the lower glove box panel.
       

    6.  
    7. Install the heater core cover plate and connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
    8.  
    9. Refill the cooling system.
    10.  
    11. Connect the negative battery cable.
    12.  
    13. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    14.  

    With Automatic Climate Control (ACC) Or Manual Climate Control (Mcc)

    NOTE
    On some vehicles equipped with Automatic Climate Control, a thermal switch is located on the outlet hose from the heater core. It switches ON and starts the fan motor only when the water temperature exceeds approximately 95°F (35°C). This prevents cold air from being blown into the passenger compartment during winter.     1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the ashtray, the ashtray holder, the cigarette lighter and the console-s storage compartment.
    8.  
    9. Remove the console assembly from the gearshift lever and the parking brake.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the rear ashtray, the console and light.
    12.  
    13. Remove the screws beneath the plastic cover in the bottom of the storage compartment and the parking brake console.
    14.  
    15. From the left side of the passenger compartment, remove the panel from under the dashboard.
    16.  
    17. Pull down the floor mat on the left side and remove the side panel screws, the front and rear edge.
    18.  
    19. From the right side of the passenger compartment, remove the panel from under the glove compartment and the glove compartment box with the lighting.
    20.  
    21. Pull down the floor mat on the right side and remove the side panel screws, the front and rear edge.
    22.  
    23. Remove the radio compartment assembly screws.
    24.  
    25. Remove the screws from the heater control, the radio compartment assembly console and the control panel.
    26.  
    27. Loosen the heater control head assembly retaining screws and remove the assembly and mount from the dash.
    28.  
    29. Remove the center dash panel, the distribution duct screw and the air duct-to-panel vents/distribution duct screws.
    30.  
    31. Remove the screws holding the air ducts top-to-rear seats and the air distribution duct section-to-rear seat ducts.
    32.  
    33. Remove the vacuum hoses from the vacuum motors and the hose from the aspirator, if equipped with an ACC unit.
    34.  
    35. Remove the distribution unit housing from the vehicle.
    36.  
    37. Remove the retaining clips and the heater core assembly.
    38.  
    39. If the vacuum motors must be replaced, remove the panel from the distribution unit and replace the vacuum motor.
    40.  

    To install:

    1. Clean the heater core housing of all dirt, leaves etc. before installation. Install the heater core assembly and the retaining clips.
    2.  
    3. Install the distribution unit into the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Connect the vacuum hoses to the vacuum motors and the hose to the aspirator, if equipped with an ACC unit.
    6.  
    7. Install the air ducts top-to-rear seats and the air distribution duct section-to-rear seat ducts.
    8.  
    9. Install the center dash panel, the distribution duct screw and the air duct-to-panel vents/distribution duct screws.
    10.  
    11. Install the heater control head assembly unit and the mount to the dash.
    12.  
    13. Install the heater control, the radio compartment console and the control panel.
    14.  
    15. Install the radio compartment screws.
    16.  
    17. At the right side of the passenger compartment, install the panel under the glove compartment and the glove compartment box with lighting.
    18.  
    19. Install the side panel screws, the front and rear edge.
    20.  
    21. At the left side of the passenger-s compartment, install the panel under the dashboard.
    22.  
    23. Install the plastic cover in the bottom of the storage compartment and the parking brake console.
    24.  
    25. Connect the electrical connector. Install the rear ashtray, the console and light.
    26.  
    27. Install the console assembly to the gearshift lever and the parking brake.
    28.  
    29. Install the ashtray holder, the ashtray, the cigarette lighter and the console-s storage compartment.
    30.  
    31. Reconnect the heater core hoses.
    32.  
    33. Refill the cooling system.
    34.  
    35. Connect the negative battery cable.
    36.  
    37. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    38.  

    850 Series



    Removal And Installation

    NOTE
    On some vehicles equipped with Automatic Climate Control, a thermal switch is located on the outlet hose from the heater core.     1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Pinch off the heater hoses at the firewall with suitable clamps; this will avoid the need to drain the cooling system.
    4.  
    5. Remove the left and right sound panels from beneath the instrument panel.
    6.  
    7. Bend back the carpet, then, remove the panels from both sides of the center console under the instrument panel.
    8.  
    9. Remove the amplifier and bracket from the center console, if equipped.
    10.  
    11. Detach the drain hose from the floor board.
    12.  
    13. Remove the 4 screws holding the heater core housing to the air duct.
    14.  
    15. Place an absorbent cloth or paper beneath the heater hoses at the connection to the heater housing. Remove the flange screw at the heater hose connection. Detach the heater hoses.
    16.  
    17. Disconnect the heater housing by pulling toward the gearshift while twisting slightly upward. Remove it to one side when free of the rest of the climate control housing.
    18.  
    19. Remove the 4 screws and take the heater core out of the heater core housing.
    20.  

    To install:

    1. Install the heater core to the heater core housing and the 4 screws.
    2.  
    3. Install the heater housing.
    4.  
    5. Attach the heater hoses. Install the flange screw at the heater hose connection.
    6.  
    7. Install the 4 screws holding the heater core housing to the air duct.
    8.  
    9. Attach the drain hose to the floor board.
    10.  
    11. Install the amplifier and bracket to the center console, if equipped.
    12.  
    13. Install the panels to both sides of the center console under the instrument panel and roll back the carpet.
    14.  
    15. Install the left and right sound panels beneath the instrument panel.
    16.  
    17. Refill the cooling system.
    18.  
    19. Connect the negative battery cable.
    20.  
    21. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    22.  

    S60, S80, V70xc Models



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the heater hoses in the engine compartment.
    4.  
    5. Remove the seal and the plate.
    6.  
    7. Remove the soundproofing panel.
    8.  
    9. Remove the stop lamp switch.
    10.  
    11. Remove the tie strap for the pipes

    2006 C70 Models



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the cooling system.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Expansion tank cover
       
      Engine splash guard
       
      Radiator hoses
       

    6.  
    7. Remove the center console as follows:
      1. Remove the parking brake boot.
      2.  
      3. Remove the panel inside the center console.
      4.  
      5. Using a plastic weatherstrip tool, carefully pry off the radio panel.
      6.  
      7. Remove the infotainment control module (ICM).
      8.  
      9. Remove the center console.
      10.  
      11. Remove the cigarette lighter/electrical socket panel
      12.  
      13. Remove the panel undercover/armrest.
      14.  
      15. Lift the rear edge of the center console. Then lift the center console forwards and upwards to remove.
      16.  

    8.  
    9. Remove the glove compartment as follows:
      1. Remove the dash panel end cover.
      2.  
      3. Remove the air duct clip.
      4.  
      5. Pull the glove compartment straight back into the vehicle to release the 2 hidden clips in the top edge.
      6.  
      7. Disconnect the 2 connectors in the glove box.
      8.  
      9. Remove the inner glove compartment.
      10.  

    10.  
    11. Detach the central electrical unit from the bracket, but allow it to hang from its wiring.
    12.  
    13. Remove or disconnect the following:
      NOTE
      The heater core has pipes that are factory integrated. These pipes must be cut in order to remove the unit. The heater core in the service kit has separate pipes.



      The brackets on both sides of the heater unit
       
      Air duct
       
      Heater unit cover. Pull the cover at angle downwards/backwards to remove.

    15. Cut or saw off the pipes and press the pipes towards the firewall so that they protrude into the engine compartment.

    17. Remove the section that holds the heater core and evaporator pipes apart.

    19. Angle the heater core up at the rear edge. Lift out the heater core towards the passenger side.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

    3. In the engine compartment:
      1. Remove the top splashguard.

      3. Install two hose clips on the hoses to the heat exchanger. Remove the hoses.

      5. Remove the air conditioning pipe in the engine compartment from the support.

    5. In the passenger compartment:
      1. Disconnect the wiring and the connectors located on the center support.

      3. Remove the mounting bolts from the center support. Remove the support.
      4.  
      5. Remove the control panel.
      6.  
      7. Disconnect all the connectors.

      9. Remove the power unit
      10.

    7. Cars with air conditioning remove the air conditioning pipe in the engine compartment from the support.

    9. Remove the bolts and the nut from the power unit. Pull the power unit backwards as far as possible

    11. Remove the upper section from the housing.

    13. Remove the section that connects with the floor heater.

    15. Press the pipes down. Remove the lower section.

    17. Remove the four mounting bolts.

    19. Pull off the housing. Press the floor heater down. Remove the housing.

    23. Remove the mounting and the clips around it.

    25. Carefully separate the components.

    27. Replace damaged components if necessary.
      NOTE
      Do not disassemble damper motors when adjusting.

    29. Replace the refrigerant temperature sensor.

    31. Replace the heat exchanger.

    33. Check the seals (also on the dampers).

    35. Install the control mechanism last.

    37. Install in reverse order.

    C70, S70 And V70 Models



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    4.  
    5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    6.  
    7. Using tools No. 155 8957, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core by pressing in the hose connections, squeezing the locking catches and pulling out the hoses. Discard the O-rings.
    8.  
    9. At the driver-s side, remove the soundproofing panel-to-dashboard Torx® 20 screw and the soundproofing panel.
    10.  
    11. Open the glove box door; then, remove the 4 glove compartment-to-dashboard Torx® 20 screws and the glove compartment.
    12.  
    13. At the passenger-s side, remove the 2 soundproofing panel-to-dashboard screws and the soundproofing panel.
    14.  
    15. At both the driver-s side and passenger-s side, remove the carpet supports.
    16.  
    17. If equipped, remove the Road Traffic Information (RTI) control module bracket or booster bracket.
    18.  
    19. If equipped, remove the knee bolster.
    20.  
    21. Disconnect the drain hose and fold it out of the way.
    22.  
    23. At both sides of the heater/air conditioning housing assembly, remove the heater core cover screws.

    25. Remove the heater housing pipe flange screw.
    26.  
    27. Carefully, remove the heater core with the heater core cover.
    28.  
    29. Remove the heater core from the cover.

    To install:

    1. Install the heater core to the cover.
    2.  
    3. Carefully, install the heater core with the heater core cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the heater housing pipe flange screw.
    6.  
    7. At both sides of the heater/air conditioning housing assembly, install the heater core cover screws.
    8.  
    9. Connect the drain hose.
    10.  
    11. If equipped, install the knee bolster.
    12.  
    13. If equipped, install the Road Traffic Information (RTI) control module bracket or booster bracket.
    14.  
    15. At both the driver-s side and passenger-s side, install the carpet supports.
    16.  
    17. At the passenger-s side, install the soundproofing panel and the 2 soundproofing panel-to-dashboard screws.
    18.  
    19. Install the glove compartment and the 4 glove compartment-to-dashboard Torx® 20 screws.
    20.  
    21. At the driver-s side, install the soundproofing panel and the soundproofing panel-to-dashboard Torx® 20 screw.
    22.  
    23. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core by inserting the hoses, squeezing the locking catches and pressing in the hose connections.
    24.  
    25. Refill the cooling system.
    26.  
    27. Connect the negative battery cable.
    28.  
    29. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
