Master Cylinder Kit (Clutch System) Operation:

A hydraulic cylinder containing a piston that's put into motion by pressure from the clutch pedal. This pressure pushes hydraulic fluid into a slave cylinder, forcing the pressure plate to release the clutch. The master cylinder kit usually consists of a plunger assembly, rubber cups and required o-rings.
