    Clutch Bearing

    Inspect/Replace

    • To remove the release bearing after the engine and transmission have been separated, simply disconnect it from the clutch release fork.
    • While installing a new release bearing into the release fork, make sure the bearing is fully seated.
    • Release bearings are lubricated and sealed during manufacturing, therefore they require no additional lubrication when they are installed.
    • However, to prevent the release bearing from binding on the bearing retainer or release fork, a very light coating of grease should be applied to the bearing's collar and on the release fork. Do not allow the grease to get on the friction surfaces of the disc, pressure plate, or flywheel.

    • A release bearing should never be washed in cleaning solvent because the solvent will remove the lubricant from the bearing and cause premature failure.
    • The hub of the bearing and the transmission's front bearing retainer should be free of all defects and rough spots.
    • If the bearing retainer has any defects, it should be replaced.
    • When installing a release bearing, make sure its retaining clips are securely in position.

    • Constant running release bearings are installed with a preload that must be set during installation.
    • Procedures for doing this can be found in the appropriate service manual.
    • If the vehicle is equipped with a concentric slave cylinder, the release bearing is part of that assembly. The release bearing and the clutch slave cylinder can be individually replaced.

    • The release bearing is held to the cylinder by a retaining ring.
