    Clutch Assembly

    Inspect/Replace

The pressure plate assembly is also called the clutch cover assembly. The pressure plate is a cast iron plate that is actually part of the cover assembly.

Basically, there are two types of pressure plate assemblies: those with coil springs and those with a diaphragm spring. The assemblies differ in the manner in which they move the pressure plate toward and away from the clutch disc.

You'll need to remove the clutch assembly to inspect it. note: this usually requires transmission removal.

    • Check the pressure plate surface for warpage by laying a straightedge across the surface and inserting a feeler gauge between the surface and the straightedge. Compare the measurement against the specifications given in the service manual.
    Check for pressure plate warpage.
    • Check the release levers of the pressure plate for uneven wear or damage.
