REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

1968-72 Non-Air Conditioned Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the blower motor wire leads under the hood.
  4.  
  5. Remove any parts mounted on the inside of the right fender apron.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the right front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fender apron-to-fender attaching bolts and lower the fender apron.
  10.  
  11. Insert a block of wood between the apron and the fender to gain working space.
  12.  
  13. Reach inside the fender apron and remove the blower motor mounting plate attaching screws.
  14.  
  15. Remove the blower motor, wheel and mounting plate from inside the fender as an assembly.
  16.  
  17. Reverse above procedure to install. Check system for proper operation.
  18.  

1968 Air Conditioned Models


CAUTION
Do not disconnect any air conditioning lines unless you are equipped with the proper tools/gauges and have the necessary A/C system certification. The system must be discharged before disconnecting the lines. This requires special equipment. Failure to follow proper safety precautions may cause personal injury. See Routine Maintenance for air conditioning discharging and charging information.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rubber protective cover on the firewall around the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. Take out the mounting plate-to-evaporator housing attaching screws.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the motor wires.
  8.  
  9. Lift out the motor assembly.
  10.  
  11. Reverse above procedure to install. Check system for proper operation.

1969-72 Air Conditioned Models

CAUTION

  1. Remove the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the vacuum tank bolts and fender apron bolts.
  6.  
  7. Move the fender apron inboard.
  8.  
  9. Remove the blower motor attaching screws and vent hose.
  10.  
  11. Pry upward on the hood hinge and remove the blower.
  12.  
  13. Reverse the above procedure to install the assembly. Check system for proper operation.

1973-78 Models

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Disconnect the blower motor lead wire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the mounting screw from the black ground wire location at the upper cowl. Remove both wires from the clip.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. In order to get to the blower motor, an access hole must be cut out in the right front fender apron. The pattern for this hole has been outlined on the apron by the factory. It appears as a beaded line. Refer to the illustration in this section.
  8.  
  9. A small indentation or drill dimple is present 1 / 2 in. (13mm) from the centerline of the bead. Drill a 1 in. (25mm) diameter hole at this drill dimple. Be careful not to damage the heater case by overdrilling.
  10.  
  11. Using aircraft snips or equivalent, cut along the bead to create the opening. Do not use a saber saw.
  12.  
  13. Remove the blower motor mounting plate screws and disconnect the cooler tube from the motor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the motor and wheel assembly out of the heater case and from the vehicle through the access hole.
  16.  
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply rope sealer to the motor mounting plate. Obtain a cover plate from your local Ford parts department. Drill eight 1 / 8 in. (3mm) holes in the fender apron, then install the cover plate. Check system for proper operation.

1979-87 Models

The following procedure can be used on all years and models. Slight variations may occur but the basic procedure should cover all years and models.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the blower motor ground wire and engine ground wire.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the wiring harness connections.
  6.  
  7. Remove the blower motor cooling tube.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four retaining screws from the mounting plate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the blower motor and wheel assembly. It will be necessary to turn the assembly slightly to the right and follow the contour of the wheel well.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check system for proper operation.
  14.  

1988 Models

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the blower motor lead connector from the wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cooling tube from the blower motor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Turn the motor and wheel assembly slightly to the right so that the bottom edge of the mounting plate follows the contour of the wheel well splash panel. Lift up on the blower and remove it from the blower housing.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Connect the negative battery cable. Check system for proper operation
  12.
