    Neutral Safety Switch

    The neutral safety switch is also referred to as the Transmission Range Switch (TRS) or the Manual Lever Position Switch (MLPS). Though different names are used, the switch still performs the same functions. This switch also functions as the back-up light switch, which is an integral part of the neutral safety switch on models equipped with an automatic transaxle.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    1991-96 Models

    See Figure 1

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the nut attaching the manual control shift outer lever to the manual control lever.
    6.  
    7. Seperate the manual control shift outer lever from the manual control lever.
    8.  
    9. Unplug the solenoid electrical connections located on the top and front side of the transaxle.
    10.  
    11. Unfasten the transmission range switch bolts.
    12.  
    13. Unfasten the bolts attaching the solenoid electrical connector bracket to the transaxle case.
    14.  
    15. Remove the transmission range switch from the manual control lever.

    To install:
    1. Place the switch into position on the manual control lever.
    2.  
    3. Install the bolts attaching the solenoid electrical connector bracket to the transaxle case.
    4.  
    5. Install, but do not tighten, the transmission range switch bolts.
    6.  
    7. Attach the solenoid electrical connections located on the top and front side of the transaxle.
    8.  
    9. Adjust the switch, as outlined later in this section.
    10.  
    11. Attach the manual control shift outer lever the manual control lever and tighten the nut to 33-47 ft. lbs. (44-64 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Install the air cleaner outlet tube.
    14.  
    15. Connect the negative battery cable.
    16.  

    1997-99 Models

    See Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the shift cable and bracket retaining nut and the control cable front clamp.
    6.  
    7. Unfasten the manual lever control nut and remove the manual control shift outer lever.
    8.  
    9. Unplug the transmission range switch electrical connection.
    10.  
    11. Unfasten the switch bolts and remove the switch.
    12.

    1. Shift the transaxle into NEUTRAL, then align the marks on the transmission range switch and the manual control lever.
    2.  
    3. Install and finger-tighten the switch retaining bolts.
    4.  
    5. Attach an ohmmeter between terminals A and B on the switch as shown in the accompanying illustration.

    1. Adust the switch by rotating the switch housing on the manual control lever until there is no continuity between the terminals.
    2.  
    3. Hold the switch in place, then tighten its retaining bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Remove the ohmmeter and attach the switch electrical connection.
    6.  
    7. Place the manual control shift outer lever in position and tighten its retaining nut to 33-47 ft. lbs. (44-64 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the shift cable and bracket, and tighten the retaining nut to 12-16 inch lbs. (16-22 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Move the gearshift lever to the PARK position.
    12.  
    13. Loosen the transmission range switch cable nut.
    14.  
    15. Manually move the shift cable rearward as far as possible.
    16.  
    17. Check the cable for any tension or restriction of movement and tighten the transmission range switch cable nut to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
    18.  
    19. Install the air cleaner tube and connect the negative battery cable.

    ADJUSTMENT



    1991-96 Models

    See Figure 6

    1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
    2.  
    3. Remove the clip that attaches the shift cable and bracket to the manual control shift outer lever.
    4.  
    5. Remove the manual control shift outer lever from the shift cable and bracket.
    6.  
    7. Turn the manual control shift lever to neutral position.
    8.  
    9. Remove the screw from the access hole on the transmission range switch.
    10.  
    11. Using a 5 / 64 inch (2.0mm) pin or drill bit shank, insert the pin inside the access hole and align the indentation inside the switch with the access hole.
    12.  
    13. Tighten the switch retaining bolts to 69-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm) and remove the pin.
    14.  
    15. Install the screw in the access hole on the switch.
    16.  
    17. Attach the manual control shift outer lever to the shift cable and bracket and install the clip.
    18.  
    19. Install the air cleaner outlet tube.
    20.
