    NOTE
    The oil pump is responsible for providing constant lubrication to the whole engine and so it is recommended that a new oil pump be installed when rebuilding the engine.

    Completely disassemble the oil pump and thoroughly clean all of the components. Inspect the oil pump gears and housing for wear and/or damage. Insure that the pressure relief valve operates properly and there is no binding or sticking due to varnish or debris. If all of the parts are in proper working condition, lubricate the gears and relief valve, and assemble the pump.

    NOTE

      Baffle plate

    3. Lower the pump from the engine.

    4. Install the oil pump in the reverse order of removal.
      5.  
    5. Observe the following values:

      Oil pump and baffle plate bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
       
      Oil pump suction pipe bolts: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm)
       
      Oil pump sprocket bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

    1. Install the oil pump in the reverse order of removal.

    2. Observe the following values:

      Oil pump bottom cover bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
       
      Oil pump suction foot bolts: 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
       
      Oil pump retaining bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
       

      3.  

    1.8L Engine
    1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
      2.  
    2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
      3.  
    3. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
      4.  
    4. Remove the oil pan.
      5.  
    5. Unhinge the baffle plate, then remove.
      6.  
    6. Remove the two oil pump-to-engine mounting bolts.
      7.  
    7. Press down on the subframe and remove the bolts.

    To install:

    1. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:

    2. Press down on the subframe and install the oil pump.
      3.  
    3. Install the oil pump-to-engine mounting bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      4.  
    4. Install the oil pan.
      5.

      Oil pan.
       
      Oil pump drive gear retaining bolt.
       
      Gear off the oil pump driveshaft, first fastening the drive gear to the drive chain securely with wire to prevent the gear from falling.
       
      Oil pump mounting bolts.
       
      Oil pump.

    To install:

    1. Be sure the oil pump dowel sleeves are located on the engine block.
      2.  
    2. Install:

      Oil pump. Mounting bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Drive gear and remove the string, cord, wire or tie.
       
      Drive gear retaining bolt. Bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Oil pan.

    2.0L (Aeg/Avh/Azg/Bdc/Bev/Bgd) And 2.8L (Atq) Engines
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

    2. Remove or disconnect:

      Oil pan.

    To install:

    1. Be sure the oil pump dowel sleeves are located on the engine block.
      2.  
    2. Install:

      Oil pump. Mounting bolts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Drive gear and remove the string, cord, wire or tie.
       
      Drive gear retaining bolt. Bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
       
      Oil pan.
       

      3.  

    2.5L (Bgp/Bgq) Engine
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
      2.  
    2. Remove oil pan.
      3.  
    3. Tension chain tensioner, secure it with locking pin T10115 and remove it.
      4.  
    4. Remove bolts and hold chain sprocket tightly with counterhold tool T10172.
      5.  
    5. Remove chain sprocket from oil pump and remove oil pump.
      6.  

    To install:

    1. Secure crankshaft.
      2.  
    2. Replace O-ring and hand tighten bolts for oil pump to cylinder block.
      3.  
    3. Set chain sprocket onto oil pump shaft with text facing outward and fasten it using a new bolt (drive chain still not installed).
      4.  
    4. Tighten bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm), plus an additional 90°.
      5.  
    5. Loosen the oil pump bolt closest to the crankshaft and the one closest to the chain sprocket; oil pump must be easy to move.
      6.  
    6. Make sure that no shavings are found on magnets of oil pump locating tool T03005 . Contact surfaces of crankshaft and chain sprocket must be clean.
      7.  
    7. Place oil pump locating tool T03005 onto end of crankshaft and fasten it with two of the vibration damper/belt pulley bolts.
      8.  
    8. Tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Oil pump is pulled into place by magnets.
      9.  
    9. Remove locking pin T40069.
      10.  
    10. Push crankshaft, as for checking axial bearing play, toward pulley drive.
      NOTE
      This work step is important to guarantee the correct positioning of the chain sprockets to one another.

      11.  
    11. In this position, first tighten the bolt closest to the crankshaft, the one closest to the chain sprocket, and then the remaining bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      12.  
    12. Install locking pin T40069 again. Crankshaft may only be moved minimally around TDC point. Otherwise, there is a risk that valves will contact piston.
      13.  
    13. Remove oil pump locating tool T03005 .
      14.  
    14. If a new oil pump is installed, fill oil pump with some clean engine oil via suction pipe and turn pump shaft a several times.
      15.  
    15. Place drive chain onto chain sprocket of oil pump.
      16.  
    16. Install oil pan.
      17.  
    17. Install guide rail, release tension on chain tensioner and pull out locking pin T10115 .
      NOTE
      Make sure that the drive chain is correctly positioned in the guide rail and in the tensioning rail.

      18.  
    18. Adjust valve timing.
      19.  
    19. Further assembly is performed in reverse order of removal. Note the following:


      1. Remove locking pin T40069 from rear of cylinder block and screw in locking bolt. Tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
        2.  
      2. Refill the engine cooling system.
        3.

    2.8L (Bdf) Engine

    2.8L V6 Chain Driven Oil Pump

    NOTE
    The following procedure applies to the following 2.8L V6 equipped models:



    1998 A4 models from serial No. (last 6 digits) 005001
     
    1999-00 A4 models, and 1998-00 Passat models
     

    During the production of the 1998 A4 models, beginning with VIN No. (last 6 digits) 005001, the 2.8L V6 engine oil pump has been relocated from the front cover to the oil sump, is chain driven and mounted to the front lower portion of the engine block.

    The A4 models produced with the chain driven oil pump can also be identified by the appearance of the lower oil pan surface, which is smooth unlike the finned oil pans found on earlier models.


    NOTE
    The 1998-00 Passat models all use the later style of oil pan (smooth surface) and (chain driven) oil pump system.

    To replace the oil pump, proceed as follows:

    1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
      2.  
    2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
      3.  
    3. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
      4.  
    4. Remove the engine oil pan.
      5.  
    5. Remove the oil supply tube mounting bracket fasteners, and then remove the lager of the two supply tubes.
      6.  
    6. Use a Torx® T45 wrench to remove the center bolt for the oil pump dive sprocket, and remove the sprocket.
      7.  
    7. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and remove the pump along with the short oil supply tube.
      8.

    To install :

    1. The balance of installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:
      2.  


      Thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces of the engine block and oil pan before installation.
       
      Replace all gaskets and O-rings
       

    2. Install the short oil tube to the oil pump and upper oil pan and install the oil pump. Apply a locking agent to the oil pump mounting bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      3.  
    3. Install the long oil tube and apply a locking agent both of the oil tube retainer bracket bolts and tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
      4.  
    4. Tighten the oil pan-to-engine block M10 fasteners to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
      5.  
    5. Install the lower oil pan using a new gasket.
      6.  

    Observe the following tightening torque:



    Oil pan-to-engine block, M6: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Oil pan-to-engine block, M10: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Oil pan-to-transmission M8: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Oil pan-to-transmission M10: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Coolant line-to-oil pan: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Engine mount to subframe: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Torque support-to-engine bracket M8: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Torque support-to-engine bracket M10: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
     
    Side brace-to-torque support bracket: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Oil drain plug: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
     

    1. Tighten oil pan-to-engine block bolts in 2 stages and using a crisscross pattern working from the center outward. Tighten as follows:
      2.  
      1. Oil pan-to-engine block M6 bolts, Stage 1, 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
        2.  
      2. Oil pan-to-engine block M6 bolts, Stage 2, 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
        3.  

    2. Install the torque support onto the rubber buffer for the torque support and tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
      3.  
    3. Fill and top off the engine oil and engine coolant as necessary. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Fluids And Lubricants.
      4.  
    4. Check for any fluid leaks and repair as necessary.
      5.  

    2.8L V6 Engine Cover Mounted Pump

    NOTE
    The following procedure is for 1996-97 Audi A4 models, and 1998 A4 models up to serial No. (last 6 digits) 005000.

    During the production of model year 1998 Audi A4 models, the oil pan, oil pump drive, and their location were changed.

    The 1996-97 A4 models all use an oil pump that is part of the front engine cover.

    The 1998 A4 models use this pump up to VIN No. (last 6 digits) 005000. The A4's using this front cover mounted type of pump can also be identified by a finned outer oil pan surface.


    NOTE
    The 1998-00 Passat models all use the later style of oil pan (smooth surface) and (chain driven) oil pump system.

    1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
      2.  
    2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
      3.  
    3. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
      4.  
    4. Remove the lower engine oil pan.
      5.  
    5. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routine Maintenance And Tune-Up.
      6.  
    6. Remove the camshaft timing belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Engine And Engine Overhaul, Timing Belt And Sprockets.
      7.  
    7. Drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
      8.  
    8. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
      9.  
    9. Remove the center crankshaft bolt as follows:
      10.  
      1. Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder No. 3.
        2.  
      2. Remove the sealing plug from the lower left side of the engine block.
        3.  
      3. Lock the crankshaft using Tool No. 3242 or its equivalent.
        4.  
      4. Using a suitable 12-point socket and breaker bar, remove the bolt. Note the required torque for removal of this bolt exceeds 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm).
        5.  

    10. From the front lower engine cover remove the following items:
      11.  
      1. The belt tensioner roller.
        2.  
      2. The oil spray jet.
        3.  
      3. The idler roller.
        4.  
      4. The belt tensioner.
        5.  
      5. The belt tensioner lever.
        6.  

    11. Remove the crankshaft timing belt drive gear.
      12.  
    12. Remove the front cover oil pump housing mounting bolts, and then remove the cover/oil pump assembly.

    1. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:

    Observe the following torque specifications upon installation:



    Oil pump-to-cylinder block M6: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     

    Crankshaft center bolt:



    Step 1: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
     
    Step 2: 90°
     
    Step 3: 90°
     

    1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces for the oil pan and pump.
      2.  
    2. Install the oil pump and verify the oil pump drive is properly engaged into the end of the crankshaft.
      3.
