    Electrical Fuel Pump

    Print

All fuel injected models use an in-tank type pump. The fuel pumps are of a wet type, where the vane rollers are directly coupled to the motor, which is filled with fuel. A relief valve in the pump is designed to open, should a malfunction arise in the system.

Before disconnecting the fuel lines or any of the fuel system components, refer toFuel Pressure Release procedures, in this section and release the fuel pressure.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF. Properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Also observe all safety practices outlined earlier in the Fuel System Safety Precautions. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.

    1. Following proper procedures, relieve fuel system residual pressure.
    2.
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    4.
    5. Open the trunk lid, disconnect the fuel gauge electrical connector and remove the fuel tank inspection cover.
    6.

If vehicle has no fuel tank inspection cover the fuel tank must be removed.

    1. Disconnect the fuel outlet and the return hoses.
    2.
    3. Using a large brass drift pin and a hammer, drive the fuel tank locking ring in the counterclockwise direction.
    4.
    5. Remove the locking ring and the O-ring, then lift the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. Plug the opening with a clean rag to prevent dirt from entering the system.
    6.

When removing the fuel tank gauge unit, be careful not to damage or deform it. Install a new O-ring.

    To install:
    1. Install fuel pump assembly in tank. With a new O-ring install the fuel tank locking ring in place.
    2.
    3. Reconnect the fuel lines and the electrical connection.
    4.
    5. Install the fuel tank inspection cover.
    6.
    7. Connect battery cable, start engine and check for leaks.
    8.

    TESTING

Fig. Fig. 1: Connect the fuel pressure gauge as shown

    1. Disconnect the fuel hose at the throttle body inlet hose; this is the hose leading from the fuel filter. Install Pressure Gauge tool J-25400-34 or equivalent, in series with the hose running between the fuel filter and the throttle body. Place the gauge, so it can be read from the driver's seat.
    2.
    3. Start the engine and read the fuel pressure, it should be as follows:

E16i-14 psi (96.5 kPa) for 2WD and 36.6 psi (252.3 kPa) for 4WD at idle

GA16i-34.0 psi (234.4 kPa) with regulator vacuum hose connected

GA16i-43.4 psi (299.2 kPa) with regulator vacuum hose disconnected

    4.

If the reading is not correct, replace the pressure regulator and repeat the checking procedure. If the pressure is below specifications, check for clogged or deformed fuel lines; if necessary, replace the fuel pump or check valve.
