- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system.
- Road test the vehicle and check the steering system for proper operation.
-
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
CAUTIONThe electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting or jacking an air suspension vehicle. This can accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located below the glove box in the lower right of the passenger foot well. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in the shifting of the vehicle during these operations.
-
Turn the air suspension switch to the OFF position.
WARNINGDo not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and re-centered.
-
Remove or disconnect the following:

Remove and discard the original seals.Steering gear-to-frame rail retaining boltsSteering gear and spacer.
- If replacing or servicing the steering gear, match mark the sector shaft arm to the sector shaft and remove the steering gear sector shaft arm retaining nut and lockwasher.
- Remove the sector shaft arm.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Install a new seal on the hose fittings at the power steering gear. When installing the power steering lines, use special installer tool, Installer Set, Teflon® Seal 214-D027 (D90P-3517-A), or equivalent. Stretch the seal over the special tool until it is large enough to slip over the tube nut.
-
Observe the following torques:
Steering gear mounting bolts: 199 ft. lbs. (270 Nm)Intermediate shaft pinch bolt: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm)Sector shaft-to-gear: 203 ft. lbs. (275 Nm)Sector shaft-to-drag link: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
NOTENew O-ring seals must be installed any time the lines are disconnected from the steering gear.
- With the transmission in Neutral , raise and support the vehicle.
-
Remove the skid plate.
WARNINGThe boots and clamps are designed to produce an airtight seal and protect the internal components of the steering gear. If the seal is not airtight, the vacuum generated during turning will draw water and contamination into the gear, causing premature damage.
WARNINGZip ties do not provide an airtight seal and must not be used.
WARNINGThe inner ball joint grease is not compatible with water, and contamination trapped in the grease will degrade the life of the joint.
WARNINGIf present, the orientation of the vent tube must be noted so the boots and vent tubes can be installed in the correct location.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the lower shaft-to-steering gear bolt.
-
Disconnect the lower shaft.
NOTEDo not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the lower shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and re-centered. Follow these steps to center the clockspring.
-
Hold the clockspring outer housing stationary.
WARNINGOverturning will destroy the clockspring. The internal ribbon wire acts as the stop and can be broken from its internal connection.
- While turning the rotor counterclockwise, carefully feel for the ribbon wire to run out of length and for a slight resistance. Stop turning at this point.
- Turn the clockspring clockwise approximately three turns. This is the center point of the clockspring.
- Do not allow the rotor to turn from this position. Two pieces of tape may be applied to the clockspring to prevent accidental rotation, until the clockspring is installed.
-
Hold the clockspring outer housing stationary.
- Remove the clamp plate-to-steering gear bolt
- Remove the power steering high pressure hose.
- Remove the O-ring seal.
- Remove the power steering return hose
- Remove the O-ring seal.
- Remove the tie-rod nuts.
- Remove the outer tie-rods. When repairing the right side, it is necessary to pull back the left inner tie-rod boot to hold the steering gear. Note the number of times the tie-rod ends turn for assembly reference. After removing the tie-rod end, remove the tie-rod end jam nut from the front wheel spindle tie-rod
- Remove the bracket-to-crossmember nuts.
- Remove the bracket-to-crossmember bolts.
- Remove the steering gear-to-crossmember nuts.
- Remove the steering gear-to-crossmember bolts.
- Remove the bracket.
- Remove the steering gear. Remove the steering gear through the left side wheel opening.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Fill and leak test the system.
- Check and, if necessary, align the front end.
- Install new O-ring seals onto the power steering hoses.
-
Observe the following torques:
