    5yr Battery?

Battery lasted 3 years and 4 months. New the battery was very powerful and started the car quickly, even on the coldest of days. Recently the battery suddenly failed. Drove to the market and shopped. I came out, tried starting the car and it wouldn't start. I took the the terminals off and it had no corrosion build up. I got a jump and it fired right up. Alternator was charging fine @14.1 volts. I got home shut it off and it was totally dead again. I went to check the battery and I could smell acid and the battery was smoking a little coming from the negative side terminal. The battery was hot to the touch only on the negative side of the battery. I took it out of the car and it stayed hot for over an hour like it had a internal short on the negative side. It still smoked a little as it was sitting on the ground. I put a new battery in and everything is back to normal.

    Pros: Very powerful battery

    Cons: Didn't last long

Time will tell if Duralast will continue to be my battery choice

4 of 4 people found this helpful

This is the 3rd battery my truck has had in 20 years. When removing the old Duralast Gold 78-DLG, I found a plastic envelope attached to the side of the battery from when it was new that contained a free jump-start roadside assistance card. The back side of the card stated that the card had to have been activated before 1 July 2005 to be valid and was only good for 3 years, so it would have been worthless last night when the wife and I push started the truck. So assuming the card was good when I purchased the last battery, it lasted no less than 11 years, and the original battery from GMC lasted no longer than 9 years. During those 11 years the truck has driven across country and up-and-down the west coast a few times. It has also sat for 6-7 months at a time while I've been on deployments. The old battery also got me home last year during when the volt/ammeter told me the alternator was dying. I'm hoping the new battery lasts just as long as the old one.

The new ones no longer have the yellow top. They no longer have the built in carry handle either. They no longer have those distantly familiar words "Made in USA" written on the label under the reserve capacity rating (which is just plain depressing). And there's no two free jump starts a year roadside assistance card (is it because Autozone doesn't have faith in the Chinese/Mexican/Wherever made battery?). As best I can tell, they're still made by Johnson Controls and distributed by Best Parts, they're just not advertising where specifically it was made.

Time will tell if Duralast will continue to be my battery choice.

Pros: Last one lasted a good long while

Cons: Where'd the yellow top go?

    1

Old battery from 2005 (or earlier) and free jump...

    2

Old and never used free jump start card that was...
