For a 93 Camaro Z28, 6 months in the Florida heat havent been so bad

My used 93 Camaro Z28 was bought with the ad stating "Ice cold AC".. and it was.. for about 2 weeks until the system leaked out enough. I thought that compared to the cost of a full-on AC system replacement that dropping 5 bucks every 2 weeks on a can of r134a refrigerant was an ok trade off. Then one day my low side hose managed to rub itself against the compressor clutch and after a drive to work.. I noticed the pressure leaking out. So I got a new hose and a seal kit. My old compressor still worked however there was a leak at the ports on the back. I intended to just replace the hose but the compressor needed to be removed to be able to GET the replacement hose on there. The compressor removal was so difficult that once I got it out.. I decided to get an AC Compressor bypass pulley(it was winter and I thought I would worry about it in the summer). So summer rolls around and in the ridiculous Florida heat, I knew I needed to do something. I got one of these CompressorWorks ac compressor w/ clutch brand new(not rebuilt), a new accumulator, and new expansion valve. Grand total came to about 350 dollars including the hose, freon, and PAG oil. Then I went to harbor freight and picked up AC manifold gauges and a vacuum pump for another 150, making my grand total about 500 all said and done. The manifold gauges and vacuum pump are NOT optional if you are doing this job yourself, as you need to pull a vacuum on the system when you are ready to charge it because atmospheric moisture is bad in automotive AC systems.

Anyways, getting the new compressor in there was just as difficult as getting it out. I had to disconnect my sway bar and even then I spent a few hours on my back trying to finagle that sucker into place properly. All told it took me about a day to get the compressor out, then two days reinstalling everything, then a third day trying to draw a proper vacuum because my BRAND NEW hose had a bad valve core and was allowing the vacuum to leak out after about 5 minutes.

And now 6 months later my AC in my old camaro is still nice and cold and hasnt required a recharge once. Im very happy with my purchase and would buy this brand again in a heartbeat. I saved myself 500-700 bucks even with the cost of the manifold gauges/vacuum pump. Shops usually charge 1000+ to do a full AC job. And if the need ever arises where Ill need to do another AC job(it will, I have 3 cars I work on as a hobby).. I will be able to do it for just the cost of parts.

It was a big job and my first time doing AC work but it was very rewarding feeling the car blow cold air on a hot Florida day.

    Pros: Decent price, good functionality

Cons: Difficult install(but not the manufacturer's fault)
