    Better than OEM

The OEM part (at least on my '99 dohc saturn) had brass threads, but the sensor cover (the part that's sticking into the coolant in the head) was a plastic shell. These OEM parts usually crack from thermal stress, like mine did. It didn't leak coolant, but the temperature gauge went wacky, reading colder and colder all the time.

This sensor is used by the dashboard gauge, and by the PCM (powertrain control module), to run the radiator fan, fuel mixture trim, emissions tests, etc.

Sensor is located on the driver's end of the head.

It is just a resistor that varies with temperature. low resistance = higher temperature, high resistance = cold temperature. You can fake it out if need be with a potentiometer, but you could break or fry something if you short it.

In the peoples' republic of NY state, they make us pay to get our cars inspected yearly (even though data show that it is ineffective at reducing accident rates). Because the PCM thought the engine never warmed up enough, it never ran emissions and EGR tests, causing my (perfectly safe and emissions friendly) car to fail the inspection... grumblegrumble.

This was a cheap replacement, but appears more durable than the OEM part was.

If you've got quick hands (or if you pull a slight vacuum on the reservoir), you can avoid draining the coolant to replace it.

Pros: brass component, not prone to cracking

    Cons: not made in USA
