The power steering pump was leaking on my Escape. I bought this kit and a rebuilt replacement pump--just in case. Since the pump itself was not making any noise my hope was that it was just the seals. Because the ONLY instructions in the box were an exploded view of the pump without any kind of markings to which parts were which or disassembly or reassembly procedures I had to carefully start to pull apart my existing pump. After getting it apart, replacing old seals with the new seals i reassembled and reinstalled the pump.

There was a hell of a racket until PS fluid got to the pump (the pump should be "primed" before starting--again nothing in the instructions). After test driving the vehicle for over 15 miles of highway and city driving and it sitting overnight no leaks were to be found. Daughter drove less than a 2 miles to school and back and the leak reappeared. Frustratingly the leak appeared to be coming for the "bearing" area for the pulley shaft. Thinking I had not set the internal seal very well I took part the pump tried setting the seal more firmly, reassembled, reinstalled and test drove and leak was still present. Removed pump installed rebuilt pump and there has not been a leak since.

Because the instruction were so weak and I could not find anything after searching the web I'm not sure if there was a seal in the bearing area that should have been replaced but wasn't. I did have a couple of seals left over but didn't think too much about it since the instructions basically said this kit was for a few different applications.

Not sure how long the rebuilt pump will last (it does has a limited lifetime warranty compared to a year for the seals) it is probably worth the extra 40 bucks over just replacing the seals considering the number of times I removed and reinstalled the existing pump in an attempt to fix it less expensively.

Pros: seems to be of good quality

    Cons: light on instructions
