Duralast Fuel Filter is piece of junk!!

I lubed the gasket with grease! I lubed with diesel. I tried to torque this as far as I could, and it will not seat all the way down on the gasket causing it to leak diesel. I thought I was doing something wrong, and removed it cleaned everything and made sure plenty of fuel or grease was on the gasket. Torqued it as much as I could, stripping the nut at the top and breaking some of the plastic ridges to the point, I almost couldn't remove it again. I believe the filter or the cap is just a bit too big for the housing. After reading other reviews, I am relieved that it wasn't just something I was doing wrong. I have never had problems like this with other brand filters.

Pros: has similar filtering capability as OEM

Cons: Does not fit, and near impossible to get it to stop leaking

    Does NOT fit 1999

I lubed the top gasket and the o-ring, and wiped down all sealing surfaces on both the filter and the fuel bowl before installing, but this filter *gushed* diesel as soon as i primed the system. After fooling with it for a while, i swapped it with the FRAM version which worked perfectly with no hassle.

Comparing the two filters side-by-side, the Duralast filter is a couple millimeters taller than the FRAM. I think it bottoms out before the gasket gets a seal. It's true the gasket is a different type than the beveled OEM one (which is what the FRAM version uses). Maybe it would work fine, if the filter could just be tightened down on it.

Not sure if perhaps the later years have a slightly deeper fuel bowl or something, but this Duralast filter does not work at all in my '99, and i can't see how it could be made to work, either.

    Junk - Zero stars

Dont waste your time with this filter. After installing the filter and cap this thing leaked instantly (even after lubing o-ring with fuel and torquing to the specs). The o-ring is a new design that does not work. Ended up going with a Frame filter after several leaks. Dont waste your time with this one.

    Pros: Absolutely none

    Cons: Cap, gasket...

Just use a little bit of grease

I don't usually post reviews, but when I notice all the negative comments on the product, and what most of them where about I just had to say something. I am a diesel shop mainly working on Ford Diesels of all years. I've replaced more fuel filters with this style outer seal that I can count on 7.3L's. If you install this style o-ring dry about 70% of the time the o-ring will role out of the groove on top of the filter housing and will spray diesel all over your engine...On the other hand, if you rub a little grease on the o-ring before laying it in the housing groove and installing the filter, it will not leak. Just a note.

    Pros: Works fine for me.

    Cons: None.

    some stupid engineer changed seal

2 of 2 people found this helpful

I am a mechanic for a construction company we have six 7.3l trucks. I have always used duralast filters with no problem until last year when they changed to seal style, and now they leak badly. Do not use this product you will be wasting time and money. Find someone that carries fram they still use the beveled seal.

    Pros: none

    Cons: seal
