    Sta-Bil Kilt my Troy-Bilt

1 of 2 people found this helpful

I knew that gas will go bad over time, so I followed the advice in the lawnmower's manual and bought this fuel stabilizer, adding it to the fuel in my new Troy-Bilt lawnmower, trusting that this would allow it to start up after storing it in my garage through the winter. No such luck. The carburetor was thoroughly plugged when I tried to start it up this spring. Nothing helped - I used starter fluid and then carburetor cleaner, but as soon as I stopped spraying it into the air intake, the motor would quit. Since taking it to a repair shop was going to cost more, and I knew what the problem was, I ordered a new carb, and put it on, which fixed it.

But despite the "satisfaction guaranteed" on the label, my letter to GoldEagle (the manufacturers of Sta-Bil) got no response. I think that these products are sold with false promises. It seems that stabilizing just isn't enough to allow regular gas-station gas to be used in these small engines, with carburetors that are so prone to clogging. From now on, I'm just using canned gasoline, which doesn't have the added ethanol that the air-quality regulators require for pumped gasoline and seems to be at the root of these problems. I don't think that the people who make these small gas engines, or put them in the equipment they make, should continue to mislead people into thinking that they can use gas from the gas station and expect it to work, "stabilized" or not.

Pros: This product might work with cars

Cons: But it didn't stop my lawnmotor's carburetor from clogging up
