    Lesson repeated…again.

    Lesson repeated?again.
In most cases I recommend to use genuine parts even on the old cars
This past week my customer and I got a chance to validate this recommendation again.
It all began when his 95 Nissan Sentra 1.6 failed the smog due to mechanical problem with timing. A quick check revealed timing mark drifting counterclockwise instead of being stationary. This is most likely caused by defective harmonic balancer when the rubber fails between the pulley hub and the outer part of the pulley that has groves for belt and timing slots. Three bolts are out, side cover is off, and pulley is exposed. Next I draw white line across the rubber, started the motor, stopped it and confirmed that marks moved relative to each other (spun out pulley).
The customer went to AutoZone and bought the replacement pulley and crankshaft front seal (re-boxed Timken, made in Indonesia). The seal replacement procedure is often necessary because the part of the pulley goes into the seal, so if new pulley has smaller diameter on which seal rides on, the leak is guaranteed.
The pulley looked ok, but I recommended getting the seal from Nissan dealer, because I remembered another seal saga with similar car over 15 years ago.
The customer asked to try the AZ seal so I went ahead and replaced both. The new pulley BTW had smaller diameter that contacts the seal (confirmed with a caliper), smaller enough to leak oil if old 20 year old seal stays in place .
The old seal came out very easy, but the new seal went VERY easy as well (almost been pushed by hand). After completing all work (I used battery operated 18 V impact gun to get pulley bolt the out and put it back in), we started the car. The oil began to leak profusely from the new seal; the engine lost a quart of oil in about 10 minutes!
So the replacement seal was ordered from the dealer ($2 CHEAPER compared to AutoZone; we picked it up after 2 days). The new seal went in as it should have to (I used light hammer and ?shop-made? installation tool from PVC fitting; 40 mile drive confirmed no obvious leaks.
As a result of this ?test? we got lost oil, oil soaked belts, mess under hood, no use of the car for 3 days, double labor (second time it took less than an hour) + timing adjustment (when I have had a brain fart trying to rotate distributor after undoing wrong bolt: )) and good lesson to learn.

    Pros: Lesson learned

Cons: Seal is undersized; it began to leak and came out from timing cover; OEM (Nissan) seal fixed the problem
