Works great with a little effort

1 of 1 people found this helpful

I previously wrote a review giving three stars because like a couple other reviewers here the hooks wouldn't fit through the lower shock hole of my '72 x-body Nova. I returned it and tried a different method to get my springs back in.

That didn't work either so while researching some Nova forums somebody mentioned that if you unthread the rod entirely you can slide the hooks/block in on its side, then adjust it (with some effort) to where the hooks are on the way they're supposed to be, and then thread the rod through, compress, insert (or remove) spring, decompress, unthread rod, then maneuver the hooks/block out through the small lower shock hole. It's not easy, but it's also not that hard. Just takes a little fidgeting and grunting, but it works great.

So I deleted my old review and gave it the 5 stars it deserves.

    Pros: Sturdy

    Cons: A little too large

Convenient option if you don't have the funds to buy the tool!

Pros: Easy to use compresses the spring nicely

Cons: Lots of torqueing - not really a con for the tool

Easy to use,but binds in GM A-Body

1 of 1 people found this helpful

Used on my 69 Buick GS to install the front springs.
It compressed the springs with ease, but the bottom the the tool was stuck between the spring.
I was forced to drop the spring back down and use a pry bar and unthread the tool to get the bottom piece out, then the jaws were stuck inside, it was a hair larger than the opening in the A-Frame, I ended up wiggling it about to straighten out the jaws and slip it out between the spring when it was down, then had to lift up the A-Frame and get the ball joint connected, all in all an extra hour messing around trying to get the tool out after it was all back together...
So if you try to use on the size of spring in this 69 GS, any of the 68-72 A-Bodies, be prepared to pull it out before you get it bolted together, about 5" away from seating the ball joint. Use a floor jack to lift from under the spring pocket, then switch to a bottle jack under the ball joint for best results, or use a tool with 4 jaws instead.
Glad it was a rental and 90 day, it is going back when this job is done, it is not worthy to keep in my collection for this reason. You should be able to lift it all into place and then pull tool out, not partially up and pull tool out..

    Pros: Compresses easily.

Cons: Binds between the springs when compressed.

    BEWARE!!

Attempted to use this to install new stock height springs in a 1996 Mustang. IT DOES NOT WORK. Sure, you can get them in there, though it takes a little extra effort but the problem is removing the spring compressor after the springs are in. The top hooks simply do no fit out through either the hole in the spring perch nor do they fit between the spring coils. Might work for some people with larger diameter springs, like in various trucks but I would say this will work in few if any cars.

BEFORE YOU USE, MAKE SURE THE TOP HOOKS CAN PASS EASILY THROUGH THE CENTER HOLE OF YOUR SPRING PERCH.

    Pros: n/a

    Cons: compatibility
