Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Drain the automatic transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air intake assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the battery.
  12.  
  13. Remove the battery tray.
  14.  
  15. Remove the air intake tube and vacuum supply lines.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shifter cable and mounting bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the coolant lines from the CVT fluid cooler.
  20.  
  21. Remove the heater hose from the CVT fluid cooler.
  22.  
  23. Remove the speed sensor connector.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect and remove the wiring harness from the top of the transaxle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission vent tube.
  28.  
  29. Remove the throttle body support bracket.
  30.  
  31. Remove the upper bell housing bolts.

  33. Remove the upper transmission mounting bolts, the upper transmission mount through-bolt and upper transmission bolt.

  35. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Remove the left and right front lower splash shield.
  38.  
  39. Remove the lower splash shield, if equipped.
  40.  
  41. Support the transaxle assembly with a suitable jack.
  42.  
  43. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter, removal & installation.
  44.  
  45. Remove the transaxle fill tube by removing the 2 mounting bolts.
  46.  
  47. Remove both front wheels.
  48.  
  49. Remove the left and right halfshafts. Refer to Halfshafts, removal & installation.
  50.  
  51. Remove the torque converter inspection cover.
  52.  
  53. Matchmark the torque converter to the flexplate for the correct alignment during installation.
  54.  
  55. Remove the torque converter bolts and discard the bolts.
  56.  
  57. Support the engine with a suitable jack.
  58.  
  59. Remove the front transaxle mount through-bolt (1).
  60.  
  61. Remove the transaxle crossmember mounting bolts (2) and remove the crossmember.

  63. Remove the transaxle rear mount through-bolt.
  64.  
  65. Remove the rear mount-to-transaxle bolts.

  67. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to Transfer Case, removal & installation.

  69. Remove the lower transaxle bell housing bolts.
  70.  
  71. Carefully lower the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
Ensure that both alignment pins are present in the engine before installing the transaxle.

  1. Raise the transaxle assembly in the vehicle using a suitable jack.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower transaxle bell housing bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the transaxle cooler lines.
  6.  
  7. Install the transaxle crossmember and tighten the mounting bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the through bolt at the front transaxle mount and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rear mount through-bolt and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear mount-to-transaxle and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install new torque converter bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the torque converter inspection cover.
  18.  
  19. Install the transfer case, if equipped. Refer to Transfer Case, removal & installation.
  20.  
  21. Install the splash shields.
  22.  
  23. Install the halfshafts.
  24.  
  25. Install the front wheels.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Install the upper bell housing bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the upper mount bolts and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the upper mount through-bolt and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the throttle body support bracket and tighten the bolts to 105 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Connect the transmission vent tube.
  38.  
  39. Install the heater hose at the transmission cooler tube.
  40.  
  41. Connect the coolant lines at the transmission cooler.
  42.  
  43. Install the shifter cable and bracket, tighten the nut to 105 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  44.  
  45. Install the vacuum supply lines.
  46.  
  47. Install the intake air tube.
  48.  
  49. Fill the engine coolant with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  50.  
  51. Install the battery tray.
  52.  
  53. Install the battery.
  54.  
  55. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  56.  
  57. Connect the battery cables.
  58.  
  59. Install the transmission fill tube and tighten the bolt to 79 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  60.  
  61. Fill the transmission with the proper fluid to the correct level.
    WARNING
    Use only MOPAR® CVTF +4 fluid. Use of any other type of automatic transmission fluid may cause damage to the CVT.

  63. Road test the vehicle and inspect for leaks.
