The oil pump is integral to the Balance Shaft Module (BSM). The oil pump cannot be disassembled for inspection. The pressure relief valve is serviceable and can be removed and inspected.

  1. Inspect the pressure relief valve (4) for scoring, gouging, or debris. Replace as needed.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the pressure relief valve bore in the pump for scoring, gouging, or debris.
  4.  
  5. If the pump bore is damaged, replace BSM.

Removal & Installation

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the engine to put cylinder number 1 at Top Dead Center (TDC).
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the position of the timing chain to the crankshaft sprocket for reassembly.
  8.  
  9. Push the tensioner piston back into the tensioner body.
  10.  
  11. With the piston held back, insert Special Tool 9703 Tensioner Pin into the tensioner body to hold the piston in the retracted position.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Balance Shaft Module (BSM) mounting bolts and discard the bolts.
  14.  
  15. Lower the back of the BSM and remove the timing chain from the oil pump sprocket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the BSM from the engine.
  18.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not reuse BSM-to-engine block bolts. Always discard bolts after removing. Failure to replace these bolts can result in engine damage.

  1. Clean the BSM mounting holes with brake cleaner.
  2.  
  3. If removed, position the timing chain over the sprocket, aligning the matchmarks.
  4.  
  5. Align the matchmarks and install the chain over the oil pump sprocket.
  6.  
  7. Pivot the BSM assembly upwards and position it on the ladder frame.
  8.  
  9. Start new bolts by hand. Then tighten, in the sequence shown, in the following steps:
    1. Step 1: Tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Tighten the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Rotate each bolt an additional 90°.

  11. Remove the tensioner pin.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  14.  
  15. Fill the engine with the proper type and amount of oil.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
