Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover by pulling upward.
  4.  
  5. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coolant recovery bottle.
  10.  
  11. Remove and reposition the power steering reservoir.
  12.  
  13. Remove the windshield washer bottle.
  14.  
  15. Remove accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Remove power steering hose hold down.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 3 power steering pump mounting bolts through the openings in the pulley and reposition the pump.
  20.  
  21. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Valve Cover, removal & installation.
  22.  
  23. Remove the ignition coils from the cylinder head cover.
  24.  
  25. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  28.  
  29. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) (1).

  31. Remove the lower A/C compressor bolts, if equipped.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lower A/C compressor mount, if equipped.

  35. Remove the accessory drive belt lower idler pulley.
  36.  
  37. Remove the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  38.  
  39. Remove the 3 bolts and water pump pulley from the water pump.
  40.  
  41. Remove the lower bolt from the right side engine mount bracket.
  42.  
  43. Remove the timing chain cover lower bolts (1).

  45. Lower the vehicle.
  46.  
  47. Support the engine with a suitable jack.
  48.  
  49. Remove the right engine mount through bolt.
  50.  
  51. Remove the right engine mount-to-mount bracket bolts.
  52.  
  53. Remove the right engine mount adapter.
  54.  
  55. Remove the accessory drive upper idler pulley.
  56.  
  57. Remove the right upper engine mount bracket.
  58.  
  59. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  60.  
  61. Remove the timing chain cover retaining bolts.
  62.  
  63. Remove the timing chain cover using pry points (1, 2, 3).
  64.  
  65. Remove the timing chain cover (1) out through the bottom of the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
When using engine sealant RTV, the sealing surfaces must be clean and free from grease and oil. Also, the parts should be assembled within 10 minutes and tightened to the final torque within 45 minutes.

  1. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply MOPAR® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) as shown, at the cylinder head-to-block parting line (1, 2).

  5. Apply MOPAR® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) as shown, at the ladder frame-to-block parting line (1, 2).

  7. Apply MOPAR® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) as shown, in the corner of the oil pan and block.
  8.  
  9. Apply a 2mm bead of MOPAR® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) to the oil pan, as shown.

  11. Apply a 2mm bead of MOPAR® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) to the engine block (1, 2) as shown.

  13. Install the timing chain cover upwards from under the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing chain cover upper retaining bolts and tighten the M6 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and the M8 bolts to 230 inch lbs. (26 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 212 inch lbs. (24 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the right engine mount bracket. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt upper idler pulley. Tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the engine mount adapter and tighten the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the engine mount through bolt and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Remove the jack from under the engine.
  28.  
  29. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install the oil pan to the timing chain cover lower retaining bolts and tighten the M6 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the water pump pulley and tighten the 3 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the crankshaft damper. Refer to Crankshaft Damper, removal & installation.
  36.  
  37. Install the accessory drive belt lower idler pulley. Tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Install the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the A/C compressor. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Install the right lower splash shield.
  44.  
  45. Lower the vehicle.
  46.  
  47. Install the cylinder head cover and ignition coils.
  48.  
  49. Place the power steering pump in the mounting position. Install the 3 bolts through the openings in the pulley. Tighten the mounting bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  50.  
  51. Install the power steering hose hold down.
  52.  
  53. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belts, removal & installation.
  54.  
  55. Install the power steering pump reservoir. Tighten the mounting screw to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  56.  
  57. Install the windshield washer reservoir.
  58.  
  59. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Tighten the mounting bolts to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  60.  
  61. Install the air cleaner housing inlet.
  62.  
  63. Install the clean air hose and air cleaner housing.
  64.  
  65. Connect the negative battery cable.
  66.  
  67. Operate the engine until it reaches a normal operating temperature. Check the oil system for leaks and correct fluid levels, as necessary.
  68.  
  69. Install the engine cover.
