Power Mirrors

Diagnosis & Testing

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

The power mirrors are connected to battery feed at all times. Each mirror head contains 2 electric motors, 2 drive mechanisms, an electric heating element, and the mirror glass. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional memory system, the driver side mirror head also contains both a horizontal and a vertical motor position sensor. One motor and drive controls mirror up-and-down movement, and the other controls right-and-left movement.

An optional driver side outside electrochromic mirror is able to automatically change its reflectance level. This mirror is controlled by the circuitry of the automatic day/night inside rear view mirror. A thin layer of electrochromic material between two pieces of conductive glass make up the face of the mirror. Two photocell sensors on the inside rear view mirror are used to monitor light levels and adjust the reflectance of both the inside and driver side outside mirrors. This change in reflectance helps to reduce the glare of headlamps approaching the vehicle from the rear.

Any diagnosis of the Power Mirror system should begin with the use of a scan tool. For information on the use of the scan tool, refer to the appropriate Diagnostic Service information.

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  1. Check the fuses in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) and the junction block. If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, repair the shorted circuit or component as required and replace the faulty fuse(s).
  2.
  3. Check for battery voltage at the fuse in the junction block. If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the PDC, as required.
  4.
  5. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the driver side power window switch and bezel assembly and unplug the wire harness connector from the power mirror switch. Connect the battery negative cable. Check for battery voltage at the fused B+ circuit cavity in the door wire harness half of the power mirror switch wire harness connector. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the open circuit to the junction block, as required.
  6.
  7. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Check for continuity between the ground circuit cavity in the door wire harness half of the power mirror switch wire harness connector and a good ground. There should be continuity. If not OK, repair the open in the ground circuit.
    NOTE
For complete circuit diagrams, refer to the appropriate wiring information.

Power Mirror Motor Test

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

If the power mirror switch is receiving proper current and ground, yet the mirrors do not operate, proceed with power mirror motor test. Refer to the appropriate wiring information.

  1. Disconnect the wire harness connector at the power mirror switch.
  2.
  3. Using 2 jumper wires:
  4.
  5. Connect one to a 12 volt source.
    1. Connect the other to a good body ground.
    2.
    3. Refer to the Mirror Motor Test Chart for proper wire connections at the switch connector.
    4.
    5. If results shown in table are not obtained, check for an open or shorted circuit. Replace mirror assembly as necessary.

Wiring Voltage Test

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

The following wiring test determines whether or not voltage is continuous through the body harness to the switch.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the power mirror switch. Refer to Power Mirrors, Mirror Switch, removal & installation.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the wire connector from the back of the power mirror switch.
  6.
  7. Connect the clip end of a 12 volt test light to Pin 7 in the harness c
