Diagnosis & Testing

The power sunroof switch is a combination pushbutton and rocker switch module mounted in the Courtesy/Reading Lamp assembly. The sunroof switch is a direct contact unit that is directly wired to the sunroof motor/module assembly.

The switch cannot be repaired. If the individual components are damaged or inoperative the switch assembly must be replaced.

Any diagnosis of the power sunroof system should begin with the use of a scan tool and the proper Diagnostic Procedures Information. The scan tool can provide confirmation that the Controller Area Network (CAN) Data Bus circuit is functional, that all of the electronic modules are sending and receiving the proper messages on the CAN Data Bus, and that the power sunroof motor/module assembly is being sent the proper hard wired output by the sunroof switch.

Refer to the list below for possible causes. Before beginning sunroof diagnostics, verify that all other power accessories are in proper operating condition. If not, a common electrical problem may exist. Refer to Wiring Diagrams in this publication for circuit, splice, and component descriptions.

Check the condition of the circuit protection (20 amp circuit breaker in the Totally Integrated Power Module). Inspect all wiring connector pins for proper engagement and continuity. Check for battery voltage at the power sunroof controller, refer to Wiring Diagrams, for circuit information.

If a battery voltage of more than 10 volts is detected at the controller, proceed with the following tests (the controller will not operate at less than 10 volts).

  1. The sunroof motor is inoperative. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch

Faulty circuit ground between the sunroof module, control switch, and body harness

Faulty power circuit between the sunroof module, control switch, and body harness

    Faulty sunroof drive motor

    Faulty sunroof module

  2.
  3. Audible whine when the switch is depressed, the sunroof does not operate. Possible causes:

    Binding cable

    Faulty sunroof drive motor

  4.
  5. Audible clicking or ratcheting when the switch is pressed, the sunroof does not operate. Possible causes:

    Broken or worn drive cable

    Worn drive motor gear

    Mechanisms not synchronized

  6.
  7. Sunroof vents and opens, but does not close. Possible causes:

    Broken or disengaged trough guide

    Binding cable

    Faulty circuit

    Faulty control switch

    Faulty sunroof module

    Faulty drive motor

  8.
  9. Sunroof vents, but does not open. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch

    Faulty circuit

    Binding cable or mechanism

    Faulty sunroof module

  10.
  11. Sunroof does not vent. Possible causes:

    Faulty control switch

    Faulty circuit

    Binding cable or mechanism

    Faulty sunroof module

Switch
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the power sunroof switch.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the power sunroof switch wire harness connector.
  6.
  7. With the ignition key in the RUN position, check for 5 volts on the OPEN, CLOSE, and VENT circuits of the sunroof switch harness connector.
    1. If OK, go to Step 5.
    2.
    3. If not OK, inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the motor/module and switch for damage and repair as necessary.
    4.

  8.
  9. With the ignition key in the OFF position check for continuity between the ground circuit of the sunroof switch harness connector and a known good ground. Continuity should be present.
    1. If OK, go to Step 6.
    2.
    3. If not OK, inspect the wiring harness and connector and repair the ground circuit as necessary.
    4.

  10.
  11. Using an ohmmeter, test the continuity of the power sunroof switch in each switch position. Refer to the Power Sunroof Switch Continuity Table.
    1. If OK, inspect the wiring harness and connectors for damage and repair as necessary.
    2.
    3. If not OK, replace the power sunroof switch.
