Relieving Fuel System Pressure

Print

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

A separate fuel pump relay is no longer used. A circuit within the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is used to control the electric fuel pump located within the fuel pump module.

CAUTION
The fuel system is under constant high pressure even with engine OFF. Until the fuel pressure has been properly relieved from the system, do not attempt to open the fuel system. Do not smoke or use open flames/sparks when servicing the fuel system. Wear protective clothing and eye protection. Make sure the area in which the vehicle is being serviced is in a well-ventilated area and free of flames/sparks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the fuel fill cap.
  4.
  5. Remove the lower rear seat cushion.
  6.
  7. Remove the fuel pump module cover.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the fuel pump module electrical connector.
  10.
  11. Start and run the engine until it stalls.
  12.
  13. Attempt restarting the engine until it will no longer run.
  14.
  15. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
    NOTE
After servicing the fuel system, one or more Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) may have been stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) memory due to disconnecting the fuel pump module circuit. A diagnostic scan tool must be used to erase the DTC-s.
