Bulbs

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009


NOTE
The rear lamp unit (2) contains 3 bulbs. They are: backup (3), park/stop/rear side marker (1), and turn signal (4). The service procedures for each bulb are the same, only the bulb sizes and types may differ.


NOTE
The procedure for the Patriot is the same as for the Compass.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tail light assembly (2) from the end of the quarter panel. Refer to the removal & installation procedure for Tail Light Assembly.
  6.  
  7. Firmly grasp the appropriate bulb socket (1, 3, or 4) on the back of the tail light assembly, also called the rear lamp unit housing, and rotate it counterclockwise about 30° to unlock it.
  8.  
  9. Pull the socket and bulb straight out from the keyed opening in the housing.
  10.  
  11. Pull the base of the bulb straight out of the socket.

To install:


WARNING
Always use the correct bulb size and type for replacement. An incorrect bulb size or type may overheat and cause damage to the lamp, the socket, or the lamp wiring.


NOTE
The procedure for the Patriot is the same as for the Compass.

  1. Align the base of the bulb with the appropriate lamp socket (1, 3, or 4).
  2.  
  3. Push the bulb straight into the socket until the base is firmly seated.
  4.  
  5. Align the socket and bulb with the keyed opening on the back of the tail light assembly (2) housing.
  6.  
  7. Insert the socket and bulb into the housing until the socket is firmly seated.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the socket clockwise about 30° to lock it into place.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the tail light assembly onto the end of the quarter panel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery negative cable.
  14.  

Tail Light Assembly

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Open the liftgate to access and remove the 2 push-pin fasteners (5) that secure the rear lamp tail light assembly (4) to the side trough of the liftgate opening.
  6.  
  7. Pull the outboard side of the tail light assembly rearward far enough to unsnap the 2 ball studs on the outboard side of the lamp housing from the 2 plastic grommets (3) in the quarter outer panel (2).
  8.  
  9. Pull the tail light assembly away from the vehicle far enough to access and disconnect the 3 unibody wire harness connectors (1, 6, and 8) from the bulb socket connector receptacles on the back of the lamp housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tail light assembly from the opening of the quarter outer panel.

To install:

  1. Check to be certain that the 2 plastic seal grommets (7) are in good condition and properly installed in the side trough of the liftgate opening.
  2.  
  3. Check to be certain that the 2 plastic ball stud grommets (3) are in good condition and properly installed in the quarter outer panel (2).
  4.  
  5. Position the tail light assembly (4) to the opening of the quarter outer panel.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the 3 unibody wire harness connectors (1, 6, and 8) to the bulb socket connector receptacles on the back of the lamp housing.
  8.  
  9. Align the 2 ball studs on the outboard side of the lamp housing with the 2 grommets in the quarter outer panel.
    WARNING
    Apply firm and even pressure to the tail light assembly ONLY at the top and bottom of the unit. Applying pressure at the side or center of the tail light assembly may result in damage to the lamp lens or reflector.

  10.  
  11. Using hand pressure, push firmly and evenly on the outboard top and bottom of the lamp until both ball studs snap into the grommets.
  12.  
  13. Install the 2 push-pin fasteners (6) that secure the tail light assembly to the side trough of the liftgate opening.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
  16.

Removal & Installation
Assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fascia to splash shield screws.

  7. Remove the lower fasteners (4) from the fascia (5) and disconnect the electrical connectors (2 and 3).

  9. For the Compass:
    1. Remove the fasteners (1 and 2).
    2.  
    3. Remove the push-pin fasteners (3).
    4.  
    5. Loosen the fasteners (5 and 6) and remove the fascia (4).

  11. For the Patriot:
    1. Remove the push-pin fasteners (6) from the wheel wells.
    2.  
    3. Remove the screws (5) from the wheel wells.
    4.  
    5. Remove the screws (3).
    6.  
    7. Remove the push-pin fasteners (1 and 2) and remove the fascia (4).

  13. Remove the 3 nuts (2) that secure the headlamp unit (1) mounting brackets to the 3 studs (3) on the front fender and the front end support structure.
  14.  
  15. Pull the headlamp unit away from the front of the vehicle far enough to access the wiring connections on the back of the lamp housing.

  17. Disconnect the engine compartment wire harness connector (3) from the headlamp bulb connector receptacle (2).

  19. Remove the headlamp unit (1) from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Position the headlamp unit (1) close enough to the front of the vehicle to reconnect the engine compartment wire harness connectors to the back of the lamp housing.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect the engine compartment wire harness connector (3) to the headlamp bulb connector receptacle (2).
  4.  
  5. Position the headlamp unit (1) mounting brackets onto the 3 studs (3) on the front fender and the front end support structure.
  6.  
  7. Install and tighten the 3 nuts (2) that secure the lamp mounting brackets to the studs. Tighten the nuts to 25 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the fascia onto the front of the vehicle in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Confirm proper headlamp alignment.
  14.  

Bulb

Specific to:

Jeep Compass 2007-2009

Jeep Patriot 2007-2009


WARNING
Do not contaminate the bulb glass by touching it with your fingers or by allowing it to contact other oily surfaces. Shortened bulb life will result.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine compartment wire harness connector from the connector receptacle integral to the headlamp bulb base (3) on the back of the headlamp unit housing (1).
  6.  
  7. Using the tabs on each side of the connector receptacle, firmly grasp the bulb base and rotate it counterclockwise about 30° to unlock it.
  8.  
  9. Pull the bulb and base straight out from the keyed opening in the headlamp reflector (2).

To install:

  1. Align the headlamp bulb base (3) with the keyed opening on the back of the headlamp reflector (2).
  2.  
  3. Insert the bulb and base into the reflector until the base is firmly seated.
  4.  
  5. Using the tabs on each side of the connector receptacle, rotate the bulb base clockwise about 30° to lock it into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wire harness connector to the receptacle integral to the bulb base on the back of the headlamp unit housing (1).
  8.  
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.
